Apple Rant
« on: August 20, 2013, 06:15:09 PM »
I've never quite gotten use to the raves about Apple. From my perspective it's marketing a bit like Saturn cars.

My wife wanted an iPad last Christmas so I got her one and she abandoned her Kindle. So far so good... until about two weeks ago. We started getting eMails from Apple implying someone had tried to change her password but not to worry, "someone must have miss-typed their password." Really? My wife knows to use strong passwords.

Then we get an eMail saying her password has been successfully changed. Really?!?! We didn't change it. She immediately follows the I forgot my password routine and sets a new one. This happens 3-4 times over a two week period. Finally she makes an appointment at "The Genius Bar" at the nearby Apple store.

I tagged along. What a nightmare! First thing I noticed there was one techie for every two customers in the place. I thought perhaps to provide premiere sevice. Wrong! We finally get to speak to one and her first suggestion was that we "call" the Apple help line. Trying to speak and hear was virtually impossible over the din in the store.

Long story short, we will receive an eMail that will supposedly give us instructions on fixing this within 24 hours. Sorry, but wouldn't take an iPad as a gift.

We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I have 2 iPads (orig and mini) and my wife has a ipad 2. I've also had two iPhones, same for my daughter.
Never had an issue with any of these devices. And did not buy any of them in the apple store, I would not go in there. Most recent purchase was the mini at Best Buy, in/out 20 min.

Sounds like your wife may have been part of a possible scam?

Inspect the emails to see if they are really coming from apple.  Lots of time I get fake PayPal emails.

On a separate but same apple rant.  I followed apple stocks since the first iPhone came out in what 2007? They were about 90 bucks a share, now at 500 bucks.  I'm sorry that I didn't buy any :(

Probably not as sorry as the suckers that bought it at $700. Heck look at Amazon yet it's never turned a profit. I feel 'safer' in index funds.  ;)

I would agree.

I just have the iPad. Would like a Desk top model but for what I use a desk top for it's just not feasible.

My iPhone 4 works perfectly. Today I noticed I am now on the Verizon network here at home. Mohave Wireless was bought out by Verizon thank GOD. So much better.

I wasn't trying to promote any particular technology. I think there are interesting things going on in several OS arenas these days. It was more about the service and support, or lack thereof, we encountered. Sticking with my very compact Kindle Fire for now. ;)

Apple is a fashion IMO.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I assume you're referring to the iTunes Store Account.
Apple has had problems with their online store being hacked in the recent past.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2097851/Apple-iTunes-accounts-hacked-steal-money-store-credit-gift-cards.html
as well as their developers portal.
http://www.net-security.org/secworld.php?id=15438

However, this isn't just an Apple problem, any online account is always in danger of being hacked these days.
You should be able to resolve this over the phone, a visit to the Apple store shouldn't be necessary.
(I find the Apple "geniuses" pretty 'effin useless myself, but then I've been using Apple gear for 30 years.)  ;)

I assume you're referring to the iTunes Store Account.

I'm not the Apple user so I'm not sure. I equate the iTunes Store to music downloads. My wife downloads no music. If the same portal is used for ALL on-line activity re: Apple, then perhaps I am. All I know is my wife refers to it as "her Apple account ID and password." She has very strong passwords and her answers to her security questions are totally obtuse and couldn't possibly be guessed by even her closest friend. I'm aware that security is a serious problem for all on-line accounts, but this one IS an Apple problem.

I got two sad stories about Apple. But first I'd have to praise Microsoft.  I've never had any issues like these with them.

My daughter had to have a Mac for her major in college. I was smart enough to get the extended warranty.Just after she graduated, and about a month before the extended coverage was to expire, it failed. So, off the the Apple store to see about repair. Lugged the anchor into the mall, and the "Genius" said that I'd have to schedule a repair.  Online.  Apparently, broken Macs can still schedule repair visits online?

I, also bought Da Wife an Ipad 2.  It took a swim in her purse with a bottle of water. Apparently the purse was real water tight.  In talking with Apple, and at the first mention of "water", they refused to even look at it. Their only suggestion was to buy a new one.  We found an independent repair place online and sent it to them, packed in raw rice(at their request) to draw out moisture.  $180.00 later, it is fine, with the exception of the front facing camera, for about a year and a half so far.  Her office bought her a Mini, so the 2 is now mine.

For the record, I hate Itunes, but to download even free apps, you have to set up an account.  But you don't have to give them a credit card, so I'll give 'em that.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Yeah, it's all the same account.  Music, apps, etc. Honestly it's kinda a kluge.

My company back in the day gave me profi apple notebook.  That thing was sweet and stable - on Linux and all that jazz.

But I hate the black box approach Apple as a company practices.   For my own I buy used laptops and swap parts as needed and fix it when the time comes.  Shait, that sounds a lot like my CB750  ;D ;D

+1 on that.

also, she may be using strong passwords, but is she using *different* strong passwords across all of her different accounts?  i got lazy for a while and was using the same strong password on a number of accounts (email, Blizzard, bank, etc) and someone hacked one of them - my email i think - and then ba-zam!  2 other accounts got hacked. so that was a bad week.  now i use multiple strong passwords, and change them every now and then.
