Stuck at 12mph 400f speedo ? Solved
« on: February 02, 2014, 11:50:10 am »
So I pulled my speedo and tach apart for cleaning and painting and now the speedo reads 12mph. I can gently push the needle back to zero but it comes right back to 12? Do you guys know how to calibrate these or do you think it's screwed?
Your help is much appreciated with this as this is the first time I've had to deal with such a problem.

...show us some pictures of the internals, may be You bent the spring or the stop plate.
May be You put it back together in the wrong way but I am unsure, don't know what You did.
Can You move the needle to ~100mph and is it comming back to 15mph ?

Pull the needle off and set it to zero, then push it back on.

Not really much inside so I hope this helps. This is the main speedo drum.

The two tangs should meet and that is zero mph.

I know there's a dampening fluid in there somewhere so I'm wondering if the guild has a bubble in it or something?

... japp!--> " The two tangs should meet and that is zero mph. "

The spring is pulling it back to zero but Yours stopps @ 15mph AND can be moved to 0mph!

Go and get a reference speedo and check them with a drilling machine at the same RPM!
Set the needle to 0 MPH and check the redings with the reference speedo, if it is equal just bent the stopper a little bit back that
the needle will stop at 0MPH-->DONE!
If not You have to take a look at the spring and adjust it/ bent it + or - as long as the readings of bothe speedos are equal.

BUT MAY BE IT IS SOMETHING ELSE, I DONT HAVE IT HERE IN FRONT OF ME.
ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO DO LOONG DICTANCE DIAGNOSTICS ;)

Please take a pictute of the spring but if You don't tried to refill the sillicon oil it should be ok but take a picture first.

The funny thing is, is, that when I took it apart to clean it up it was at zero. I came back in the morning and it was at 12? All I'm trying to figure out is how to set it back to zero? I guess I'll take my other gauge set apart and use it or just continue to f with this one till it makes sense.?
Thanks

So finally figured out what went sideways with my speedo. Since I couldn't get the reset knob off I had to disassemble the trip meter inside the housing and when I did that I squashed the return spring. This in turn caused the speedo needle to float up to 12mph. I fished a small flathead in there and re-sprung it. I searched and searched and found nothing so maybe this will be of help to someone some day.
Thanks for the input it's appreciated.
