All Ball steering bearings tips- 1974 cb750
« on: January 19, 2015, 09:25:45 am »
Alright guys got everything prepped to install a new All Balls kit on a 74 cb750. Been browsing the threads for a refresher, been many years since the last. See different options, grinding cap, thin washer on bottom, no dust seal top,  etc etc. Think I have a plan but who has some tips who has done it successfully lately so its a one shot deal with fork ears lining up nice and all that jazz.
Thanks in advance for the tips.--  Eric

Charlie/OldHatt did it recently on his K6. From all the reading I've done, it seems like for the 750, you either need to grind down the protrusions on the top nut or not use the top bearing dust seal to make it fit right. At least I haven't seen a case where someone has had a good fit with the top nut intact and the seal in place.

get the lower height right first so that the steering stops line up. I had an ear gap at the top, but was able to fill it by scooting the upper seal for the ear upwards a little. Worked good and looks normal. Just my situation, I know those things can have weird results sometimes relating to height.

I had the gap and used another set of the rubber fork ear grommets trimmed to fit the bottom to snug the gap. It shifts the ears up slightly but you can't tell because of the overhang of the outer ear on the lower tree. It is only maybe a quarter inch change

Eric (aka ekpent),

Ed is correct, I just finished up putting in my All Balls tapered bearing kit on my K6 750.

First thing is to measure the stack size for the bottom bearing, so you get the right height and the steering stops are in the right place.
Measure (side by side) the old bearing (with at least a few balls in it) next to the new bearing with the spacer.  Should be less than a 1mm difference between the two.  Once you have the lower bearing stack height correct you can install it, following the All Balls set up.

Then you can put in the Upper Race into the neck.
Do a test fit and put the "castle" type nut on and see if/how much the gap is.
If there is a gap, then take off the "castle" nut and grind off the ridge inside the nut.
Put it back on and the gap should be gone.
I found that putting the nut on and snugging it down and leaving it for a day to seat, then coming back and loosening it up and resnugging it made the difference after grinding the ridge off.  No gap at all.

If you want more info, feel free to pm me and I'd be happy to talk to you over the phone.

Eric, if you get stuck just give me a call.  I have done a bunch of these in the last few years.
If it works good, it looks good...

Dont do what I did:

drank too much and forgot to install the thin washer on the bottom!

No dust seal needed on the top and no need to heat or freeze anything, a short piece of PVC pipe works like a charm to drive the lower bearing on the triple.
Dont' overthink it or drink too much!

Hey Erik,

Check out this video he had a cool driver installer he uses to install a race.  Not recommending this brand, but it appears to make easy work of the race install.

Thanks for the offer Sean and Charlie--
Steve I will try not to hit the spirits to hard until I am done , but I am weak---  :D
As for grinding the cap I see that the new kits have a special size smaller washer now that supposedly fills that gap. Will see on that
Did get some measurement before total tear out.
Thanks for the tips so far and will report back my results when completed.   Eric

Eric,

That little washer that comes in the All Balls kit, that fills the space under the ridge is part of the problem.
Leave it out and just grind the ridge off.  :)

And the offer still holds.

Good to know your kit had that and it was a problem. Did you use the top seal ?

Eric,

On my K6 all that was there when I took it apart was the 2 races (with the balls that fell on the floor - LOL) and the top nut (with ridge Part #16).

The only Dust Seal was on the bottom (part  #9) and I did use it.  Also used the All Balls supplied THIN washer to make the stack height correct.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

I know this is an old thread, but it comes up when searching about tapered bearings.

I had the same apparent fitment issues of the top clamp seeming to be about 1/8 to high.  I just raised the forks in the lower clamps the small amount so they were even with the top and all is well.  No grinding or modifying anything....
