Whew! Just spent over 12 hours working on the bike that I recently declared "pretty much done". Got the fairing and rack on, all the lights working for like, the first time ever, K&N air filter installed, all the intake boots buttoned up tight, adjusted cam chain, sealed up my points cover area in case we hit some rain, and a bunch of other little details. She's been running kinda rough at idle and it's even worse now, making little popping noises. Outside cylinders are reading about a hundred degrees cooler at the bend of the pipes than inside. Compression is an even 130 psi all around and spark seems good, I'm pretty sure I just need to synch the carbs. It's probably been 7 or 8 years since I've done it and I did a half-ass carb rebuild recently (just pulled the bowls and cleaned up the jets) after it sat for the past 5 years. Hopefully that'll do the trick. If not, I'm just gonna wing it cuz she's running great otherwise. Anyone have any advice on what bars to run with a fairing? I've got a Don Vesco Rabid Transit and my "euro" bars hit the fairing at tight turning angles. Fine when riding but you could really hurt your hand while parking (I have visions of cutting my hand in half in a crash). I'm probably going to swap out for some other bars I have that came on a Norton Commando I picked up a few years back but I'm not a big fan of them, too much rise. I think Vesco sold some bars back in the day that were fairly low but with a lot of back sweep. Any suggestions for something similar?

Sweet "F", Fmatt!
I have several sets of "K1" bars, low-rise type, that might fit? (2.5" rise, top-to-top). But, you'd probably have to drop by to try them out, I guess...I'll be 'under the knife' on Tuesday, but if you came by after Wednesday I could show them to you! ;)

All packed. Leaving in the morning. Good luck everyone. Don't let the bastards run you off the road.

Bring warm clothes Terry and everyone. Right now in my part of Colorado at 11:30am it is 59 degrees. Might/could be 90's tomorrow?! Never know. We get 3 seasons weather most of the year. Winter is winter though.

I have clothes packed in a waterproof bag, but since the bike isn't ready yet, they are just sitting on the floor in my closet. Hopefully though I will be hitting the road myself tomorrow no later than late afternoon.

I printer the 550F wiring diagram to 11x17 paper and have been studying it carefully so I have a specific plan on how to trace the circuits to find what I disconnected or damaged and to fix it.

Danny have you checked voltage coming out of the ignition switch.  Can hotwire it if that is cause to get replacement switch.

Is neutral switch light coming on
 Or nothing?
Good luck troubleshooting it.

I have a replacement, I just didn't have easy access to it Wednesday night. I went down and retrieved it from the garage though and it is in my car so I can install it onto the bike tomorrow. That at least is simple, although I am going to transfer the actual switch portion from the new assembly to the old key housing so that my ignition key still works in the seat lock.

Anyone ever used "fix-a-flat" for a tube? I have a can laying around, it wouldn't be permanent but would it hold well enough to get to a place to repair properly? Just wondering if it's worth it to pack. - So I don't have to it by the side of the road.

Packing the bike up today, leaving tomorrow a.m. Kinda excited.

I have on a buddy's bike.  We were riding through Louisiana and his front tire blew out.  Makes a mess.  It comes out the hole in the tube and gets all over the inside of the rim.  He said it wasn't a very stable ride to the motorcycle dealer, which turned out to be not very far away.  We could have called them had we known where we were exactly and they would have picked his bike up and taken in for him.

I am bringing a can.  I keep it in my panniers and haven't had to use it yet but it makes me feel better and doesn't take up much room.  I have been told it is a messy operation.  But if I cannot call to get Geico I am happy to have it be messy. I will just pay the shop extra that gets stuck repairing it.
