When is the best time for a tune up
« on: December 18, 2006, 07:34:16 AM »
Hey guys,

I want to take my bike to a local 750 mechanic so that he can go over the bike for maintenance, but I am unsure of when I should do it.  I'll probably have to change some seals, change fluids, maybe brakes and some other odds and ends.  The thing is I'm not sure when I should do it.  If I do it now the bike will only sit for the next 3-4 months.

I guess I'm wondering if there are certain things I should wait until the spring to do.
Any suggestions or advice?

I'm assuming you are not riding it until spring. Go ahead and do it now. Sitting with fresh fluids is better than sitting with stale contaminated fluids. Besides, then it will be ready for the first, unexpected warm spring day we (in the higher latitudes anyway) are all waiting for.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Fair enough and I'm sure you have good reason for that :)   - but I would suggest now is the perfect time to start going over those things yourself.  None of it is difficult.  You have all winter to leisurely  go over your bike. When you're riding next summer, the peace of mind you will have knowing what all those parts are doing and what condition they are in is priceless.
I doubt there is any problem that can't be solved  with the excellent support group you have here. Not to mention the satisfaction of being independent as well as the money you will save.

I wouldn't wait till spring, bikeshop are usually flooded with tune-up jobs when the first sunny days kick in. If they have a shop full of repairjobs, they are more likely to rush the job.
