Oftentimes a mouse or a rat will chew their leg off if that's what's stuck on them but if you get two in a row usually they'll get hung even worse on the second one being a limb down.

Yeow! That's serious escape maneuvering!
Maybe the .22 approach isn't unwarranted? :D
The one I caught yesterday is about the size of the bull on my favorite 25-yard targets.
They definitely do what it takes to survive

I've had the best luck with the old victor traps. Now I keep a couple bait stations outside around the house, next to a wall or in a corner and held down by a brick. I learned that a squirrel will steal a bait station, chew it open in a tree and fall out of said tree later. Then a predator will take its head off for a treat and likely die also. I'm told it was probably a weasel or mink, they enjoy a good brain.

I like 'Rollo the rat killer' on YouTube;that dog is highly trained and if there were an Olympics of how fast a dog could kill a rat, 'Forget about it'  :D He would Win hands-down,every time. ;D

We have many 'garbage spreading' residents in these dump apts. I live around.
The residents leave bags of ripe garbage 'Outside the Dumpster' all the time  >:( which attracts rodents of all types;I'm always throwing away this trash 'into' the dumpster and hoping they haven't already overloaded it with large boxes which haven't been crushed  >:( >:( >:(

I need a pet like Rollo.  :D

So far the sticky traps are outpacing the snap-traps. My wife just called for my 'assistance' in removing the kitchen mouse I saw 2 days ago: it had tried to cross one of the sticky-traps under the sink and...sank.

Today I saw the "big" one, which is a rat the size of your fist(!). It had 3 babies with it in its 'nest' that it made of our classic Art Deco chair - mangled all the insides of the back cushion to make its nest. I got the babies and another mouse that ran up to see what I was doing when I nabbed the babies, then took off: he just found one of the other sticky-traps and is now also goners. Score today: 5(!).

It's the big rat that I want...I have a suitable-caliber self-defense device awaiting that one, if it finds one of the big rat-sticky-traps...if it finds one of the big Victor snap-traps, it will probably set the dogs to barking in the night again. Last night they were waking us up by barking at the big rat when I heard it running down the hallway.

The old mantra proves true again: if you see one, there's more. The doggie door was cracked and open about 1 inch for 5 very cold days before I noticed it. Between the below-zero snap with almost 3 feet of snow that we had a couple weeks back and the sunflower seeds my wife puts on the deck for the birds when we get the deep snow, we collected a whole community of these gremlins, probably in those 5 days before I noticed & fixed the pet door. I wondered why the dogs were suddenly waking us up in the middle of the night...

When I was younger my family lived in the the best places or areas...
I remember one time we had sticky traps out behind the stove and fridge...

So we hear the awfulest racket about 10pm. The cat has gotten behind the stove chasing a mouse and got stuck in the glue trap.

Needless to say while hilarious I'm glad I was the fuzzy kitty. He had a bad night.
