Why are cafe racers called cafe racers?
« on: March 23, 2008, 03:57:47 pm »
When I first heard the term I had this mental image of guys in berets smoking really bad cigarettes and racing between outdoor restaurants to sip little tiny cups of coffee and drink big bottles of wine. Maybe that is an accurate portrayal of the first folks who rode these bikes, but I suspect not.

Just curious, but does anybody know where the name came from?

as far as I know it was originally a derogatory term for bikes modded to look like race bikes but were street bikes. such bikes were usually poorly built, and fairly uncomfortable makeing them less useful and really only good for looking cool parked outside or riding from one to the next of the many cafe's in most major european cities. Kinda like bar hopper choppers here in america.

eventually, it morphed to cover any generic racing style street bike. The styling of the 1979-1982 cb750F-1100F, suzuki's GS series from 1980 onward, Triumph's x75 hurricane, and kawasaki's z1r are all factory "cafe racer" style bikes drawing heavily from the home made styling of the 1970s (tracy bodies, 1/4 fairings, etc). Cafe racers differ from full on race replicas because they don't actually emulate any one particular race bike but rather draw different cues from different race bikes. The DOHC cbF's most closely emulate endurance racers of the era but were also styled to look like they had a one piece body like a drag bike, and touring handlebars and pegs (although the sport kits made them more racy).

Welcome Joksa, I see you are a new member, that is excellent for your opening posts. Yes in the 50/60's to make your plain looking bike appear fast, it was important to make it look like a race bike of the time, most leisure activity then centred around the local cafe/coffee bar.

I think it started in London at a bar called the Ace Cafe
back in the 60s
When the big twins where around (triumph and BSA)
The guys that rode the bides put on clip ons and open exhaust systems.
the Locals started calling the bikes cafe bikes because they all hung out at the Ace Cafe

Just my opinion

A lot of the image sort of started with the Ace cafe in London and was linked to the "rockers" of the "mods and rockers " era in the 60's.
I was down the Ace last summer; the memorabilia they have from the era is great, a bit like the "Fonz" from happy days that you guys had in the states.
In my humble opinion, the only true cafe racers are based on old British iron.

They are called cafe racers because they were raced between cafes. They modified their bikes to make them faster as well as to give them an identifiable look.
