78 GL 1000 front end
« on: February 01, 2009, 09:01:50 PM »
i know, i know, there's a ton of posts about this already, but i just can't seem to get the answer i need from them.

here's the deal.  i just got a 1978 GL1000 front end, minus the brakes, off ebay for $40 shipped, heres the link

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280305433239&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:MOTORS:1123

not too bad eh?  well i have a 1976 750K that i want to put this on.  bascially, i need to know what all i will need to make this work, ie

will my stock wheel fit?  if not what do i need to do to make it fit.  do i need to buy the twin disc setup for the GL, or can the CB calipers and rotors fit?

like i said earlier, i know this subject has a ton of posts, but i just can't find what i need using the search function.  if you guys can let me know what's up, i would REALLY appreciate it.  i finally have more time and tools to start my project!!!  thanks a bunch, i sure appreciate it!!!

The 78-79 GL went to 5 bolt disc brake rotors, slightly less than beautiful Comstars and the speedo drive was moved to the left hand side and the calipers are different from the 75-77 GL.
I have put 78 Wheels on a stock 76 front end and it required spacers to make it all work together, but I havent done it the other way.
I have put a CB spoked wheel on the 78 GL front forks, but I usually upgrade the brake calipers and discs for better performance, so I dont know how or if the stock 6 bolt discs will work with the 78 GL (5 bolt discs) calipers.
The 78-79 GL(left) has the mounting lugs for the calipers closer together than the 75-77 GL(right). The 75-77 GL is an easier bolt on conversion for the stock spoked wheel with 6 bolt brake discs (use the early GL discs).

sell your 78 GL1000 front end and buy a 75-77 GL1000 front end, then it is just a matter of swapping the trees and everything bolts up. I have never heard of anybody using a 78 front end complete. try looking up the bearing sizes and see if there is a work around for it if the bearing size is close maybe you can shim it.

75-77 calipers are not a direct bolt on to the 78 GL front end.

what about if i get these and throw them on the triples i'll get?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-Gold-Wing-Front-Forks-GL-1000-1976_W0QQitemZ280307972444QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item280307972444&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A3|39%3A1|240%3A1318

would this make everything easier?  then just a matter of the wheel and brakes?

You'll need to get the 75-77 axle and spacers also(78-79 is different). The triple trees are the same from 75-79 so the forks will work on the later trees.
You'll aslo need the 75-77 GL calipers and  GL discs.
You will also need to make a fork stop for the GL trees to keep your bars from hitting the tank

so i have a set of 75-77 forks, rotors and calipers on their way, and i really want a fork brace to help out with the rigidity.  will this work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Motorcycle-Parts-Accessories__HONDA-GL1100-GL1000-FORK-BRACE-GOLDWING-GL-1100-GL-GL11_W0QQitemZ310098580039QQadiZ2863QQadnZMotorcycleQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116

it says it fits GL1100 and GL1000, but i asked the guy what the inner dimensions of the brace was, but he didn't know the exact, so i guess as long as its 37mm with the proper spacing it will work right?  can someone confirm please?

the trees are not the same, the 75-76 uses the 750 style stem bearings and the 77-79 use a larger bearing on the bottom.

the trees are not the same, the 75-76 uses the 750 style stem bearings and the 77-79 use a larger bearing on the bottom.

 Kinda..
  The steering stems are the same. The 75-77 GL uses K&L kit number 31-5830 that has an upper bearing of 26 X 48.5 X 15.2 and a lower bearing 30 X 50 X 14.4.
 The 78-79 GL uses K&L kit number 31-2260 and it consist of an upper bearing 26 X 47 X 17.3 and a lower bearing 30 X 55 X 17.
The first digit of the bearing size is the inside diameter of the bearing and is where it would sit on the stem. The only differnce between the 75-77 and 78-79 GL is the frame was changed where the bearings sit and the changes in outer dimension of the bearings show this change.

 Now back to the Kinda..
The only difference between the lower triple tree is the fork stops are wider apart(about 10mm) on the 78-79 than they are on the 75-77. This is because of the larger bearings used in the later GL. Other than that, they are identical.

What usually happens next is some one will chime in with an online list that was compiled with many hours of work stating that I am wrong.
The online list is wrong. I have both of the GL front ends and I have measured them many times.

The steering stem bearing kit for the CB 750 is the same one for the 75-77 GL 1000. It will also work when you put the 78-79 GL steering stem on your CB 750 K. (SOHC as the DOHC uses a different kit)

fellas.  looking to run a gold wing front wheel on a '76 750K for a customer.

GL1000 wheel with discs and calipers are on the way.  debating about forks.

can i make this work by using 750F2 forks?  from what i've read, i'll need to use the gold wing speedo drive.  if the GL1000 calipers will mount on these forks, then all i have to worry about are wheel spacers......right?

i'm thinking this is easier than buying GL1000 forks/triples/bearings....etc.

thanks in advance for the input....

yes, the GL1000 wheel is a '75.  so are the calipers.

will the GL calipers mount on 750F2 forks?  i have a 750F2 and (based on GL pics) they appear to be the same?

anyone?
