Any Ideas
« on: July 22, 2009, 04:55:58 PM »
Found this in my oilpan of my CB350F,  250 miles after rebuild.  I'll post more info when I have time tomorrow, hopefully with more pictures as well.  it is a part of aluminum casting about 2" diameter

The right side of the photo sure does look like it has a square cross section, but the left side looks different... smooshed?

FWIW, It looks like part of the head gasket but it's hard to tell for certain.  It's possible that it dropped into the case when cleaning up the remains of the old gasket.

Maybe part of the ring that holds the screen together ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Ok, here are some better pictures of the part that I found.  It is cast aluminum.  I'm almost thinking of the edge of the snap ring groove on the bearings for the primary shaft?  Also with the amount of aluminum shavings in the oil pan and filter how much of a cleanup job am I looking at.  I've got my fingers crossed for not having to do another full tear down, but if I have too... there's got to be improvements I could make the 2nd time around.

After seeing the better pix and hearing about the shavings, I don't see how you can get away without tearing into it.

I have no idea what that came from, but you've got SOMETHING not right, judging by the aluminum shrapnel all over that oilpan, and surrounding everything else.

Congrats on having some of the more mysterious sump pan debris I have seen.

One would think that whatever forces broke off that piece, would have distorted it more.

Keep us posted on what you find.

Well, soon as I get some free time I'm going to pull the engine and open it up to see what happened.  It was running oh so nice up until.....ouch

So I got the engine all apart and between 2 I am building one.  I don't have the space to rebuild it myself at the moment so I'm having a local old bike mechanic do the assembly for me.  The shrapnel came off the inside of the case by the inner primary shaft bearing.  The bearing is fine, so we are kinda stumped as to why the snap ring would have sheared off the retaining flange.  It's such a clean break from the case that I'm wondering about just a failure in the casting.   So looks that by the time the snow is off the ground, I'll have a freash built bike ready for the season early this year.

The engine wasn't worth rebuilding, but after 2 years of patiently waiting I have found a low(ish) mile barnfind bike with a solid engine in it.  The project is back underway!!!
