I am embarking on a mission this winter to build my perfect guitar amp.  I am going the cheap bastard way since all of my missions are funded by a not-for-profit organization called myself.
What I am looking for is that piece of crap amp that you don't want to admit you own.  The one that has one tube and barely a speaker.  I just need the chassis and the cabinet.  Look in your attic, basement, drainage ditches, barns, busy intersections, kids play rooms, or you neighbors house.  I prefer DOA but working will just make it fun to kill it and then rebuild it.  My wants are specific to a cabinet that could house one 12" speaker.  I am not building a large amp nor am I building a small amp.  I am building a perfect amp with a balance between weight and tone.  I have parts to trade and a bit of dough.  I'd prefer a straight trade.  i do not want any expensive vintage amps.  Keep them for your kids education fund.  I won't want to take apart a Fender or Ampeg to do this since they are actually worth something ans sound good as is.  thanks-------------ss

Just take a cheap solid state amp cabinet, gut and fill with whatever goodies you desire.

\Cheap solid state sucks. The cabinets don't have the same flair as the old ones.

But you said you don't have many $$$ to spend. That would save you a few.

I would rather have a SS amp then no amp

Good older tube amps are getting hard to find.  When you do they usually require overhaul.

ever thought about building a cabinet?

Yeah, I was a cabinet maker for a few years but I am not looking for a one off.  I am looking for that kind of "sleeper" amp.  Something that is equal to the car that shows up to the drag strip in flat black primer and then cleans the track every time.  I'd like an old Harmony or something on those lines.
I won't play through anything but a tube amp unless I'm forced.  Tube amps are as simple as these bikes we're talking about.  The tech has been around for many years and hasn't changed much.

"Hotrod Harmony"  I like it.

harmonys where ugly IMO... I like the look of an older Fender Bandmaster or an 70's Gibson
