Best of luck to you.  May none of your handwarmers be duds.

Handwarmers!? Who needs handwarmers....I eat handwarmers for breakfast  ;D

...ok so I actually have several sets of handwarmers and footwarmers just in case...however some of them are several years old so no I am not counting on them...thanks for the good luck...same to you on getting back home  ;)

Yes, ingesting the heat source.  Really would help keep your core temperature up.  Really should try that.

Congrats on making it.  And with no handwarmers or heated gear no less.  Damn.  Hats off to you (once inside).

Andy you must have some hot blood in those veins to go that distance with no heated gear. Glad you made it safe and sound.

Actually core temp was good overall....but you are right they probably would have helped especially on Saturday night when it was 33F.

Top - I had two thermal tops on (those skin tight ones -Hely Hansen), a thick t-shirt, a big fishermans sweater, a light windbreaker and a gore-tex Hein Gericke jacket.

Hands - I had Scott goretex snowmobile gloves and with the built in hand guards my hands were good down to 38C and beneath this they got a little cold sometimes.

Legs - thermal long johns, padded leather biker trousers covered by waterproof trousers.

Feet- thick winter socks and combat boots.

Neck - fleece gaiter

Head - thermal balaclava

The windshield helped tremendously as well - outside this it was freezing wind. First time I have used a windshield and was very thankful for it. When riding along the Mass Pike and seeing the wet snow piling up in front in the dark....mmm very thankful for it!!

I kept thinking about using handwarmers but it was always..."oh next stop"...only time I should have used them was on the last 50 miles...my gloves started to leak at the cuff and my hands got wet and cold.

More to follow,

cheers
Andy

Trip report:

Got up at 4am in order to catch the 5.45am flight from Boston to Green Bay, WI with a changeover in Detroit. Arrived at 9.05am local time (10.05am Boston time) and met Chuck the seller who very graciously took me to breakfast across the street at a local casino. Then it was a 1hr drive back to his place - Leopolis, WI - which is in the middle of farm country. Very nice guy and very helpful. Took a while as we tried 3 different windshield (short v tall) and I decided the tall one would be best (how true that was!).

Had planned to leave his place at 11.30am. In actual fact left around 12.15pm or so and I was eager to hit the road.  Weather - sunny, blue skies, low 40s...

First impressions of the bike - Vstrom DL1000 - huge!! This thing was massive. Tricky to move around at first as quite top heavy. Acceleration and speed were too easy. Better be careful I thought to myself.

Met Trevor (Hoodellyhoo) at Oshkosh and saw his CB350 - see pics - what a great bike and Trevor is definitely a rider - really nice guy and I was glad to have the opportunity to meet him. Sorry it had to be so quick...time was now 1.30 or 2pm I think...and I had a sexy Filipino girl to meet in Chicago...

Trevor and his 350...

Ride down to Chicago was uneventful, busy and I was just eager to turn the corner east. Sunny skies were being replaced by dark clouds and it showered now and again.

Arrived in Chicago around 5pm and hit traffic which was slow moving...

Called the Filipino girl and she had just left 10 min ago and was heading east going to a game at Exit 31 on I-90...meet me there she says...ok...

I take a wrong turn getting onto I-90 Skyway Indiana toll road and end up in a colourful part of town...not really the place youd want to break down or ask for directions...sun was going down and I was eager to get on the Toll road. Found it eventually and pressed on...rain started...road got worse due to roadworks...cold set in...ok exit 21....concentration was high due to dark, rain and cold....cruising speed around an indicated 80-85mph (but speedo likely overreads so maybe more like 75mph. I was concentraing so hard I missed exit 31 and the chance to see my old Filipino friend...ah well keep going east....I called Ray (myhondas) at around 8pm and said I was still west of South Bend and likely wouldnt make Cleveland that night. That and I was getting cold....temps were dropping and were around 33 -35F. I would make it 40 miles east of Toledo (80 miles west of Cleveland) arriving at Port Clinton at 11.15pm.

Biggest concern riding here at night were the Suicide Deer Squads...the road was littered with deers that had been freshly run over. One eye was always on the side of the road...not much you can do though at 80mph...

The heating in the hotel room didnt work and the shower was luke warm...i was pretty cold. Awoke the next morning to sunshine and frost on the bike. Temps according to the weather channel were 32F. I set off at 7.40am as the sunrose...

Port Clinton, OH

Ride to Cleveland was quick and then spent 30 min getting lost as I-90 had been closed and the detour signs werent very helpful. Eventually found my way back on I-90 and cruised along Lake Erie to exit 189 to meet Ray (myhondas) - really nice guy (thanks for breakfast and the wooden key ring!) and it was good to chat. Ray had got out his car and immediately took a photo of the bike - the couple next to me in the diner said "look at that man taking a photo of that bike, how strange"...

Ray with his laser engraved Honda logo on his jacket - very cool!

Left Ray at around 10.454am and set off in the sunshine to Erie, PA then Buffalo, NY then Albany, NY - the whole way was sunny and mildly warmer temps than the previous day. Traffic speed was zipping along and I followed a couple of cars. Stopped for lunch at some rural upstate NY gas station that i had to come off I-90 to find as I was running low on gas...only other customers were hunters....

By the time the sun went down I was in Albany at 6pm. Then it got cold. As soon as I crossed into Mass the snow/freezing sleet started. Then the wind picked up. The lashing freezing rain alternated with the snow as the elevation rose then dipped. My visor had to be propped open a little at the bottom to stop it fogging up which made my head cold. At the service stations I would get funny looks ;-)

Conditions were treacherous, with speeding Mass drivers, water on the road, spray from the other cars and trucks and snow on the shield. Speed alternated between an indicated 55 - 70mph. All this actually invigorated me and kept concentration super-high. Every mile was felt!

Made it back for 10pm. 1250 miles in total.

Never again ;-). Now this bike could ride all day and go much longer/day no problem. The issue here was the cold...body-numbing sustained cold...so while I never used heated gear it would likely have made it much more comfortable.

Got up this morning and rode the 750 K4 to work...wow feels so different!!

cheers
Andy

Well, that was a neat trip report. But I glad it wasn't me doing the trip. Way too cold and dangerous due to weather/cagers/animals/etc. for me to have tried it. Just glad that you made it ok. I know that every time I switched between various types of machines, they really felt different. Took a little while to get used to that bike again. After you left, I went and pulled #3 plug out and it was fouled with what looked like oil+gas. Cleaned the plug and checked gap, and all and bike fired up ok. Wished I'd had time sat nite to do it. Would have rather met you on the bike. Great pics also. I didn't realize that you stopped in Port Clinton. you will have to tell me what motel you stayed in. I have been going up there every year of my life. That town is like my second home. It has become a real summer resort area with the islands and cedar point just down the road. But other than that....lots of flat farmland. Sorry you missed meeting up with your old gal friend and the detour mess in Cleveland. Some of that just adds to the color of the trip and helps make it more unforgettable. ;D Enjoy the new bike and ride safely!

Hey Ray, good news on the #3 plug! I wish I could have seen your K4! Ah well next time. I enjoyed hearing about your bikes in any case.

I stayed at the Days Inn, Port Clinton - nice enough although a little more pricey than the Travelodge you had recommended. The Hampton Inn was also there but it was more than I was going to pay for 6 hrs sleep. Next door was the Deluxe Inn but it looked too cheap lol...Im sure it was fine though.

cheers

Andy, I am very glad you made it in one piece. I was a bit concerned over the weather. Congratulations.

Went down the street from where we had breakfast about 4:45pm with the bike to meet up with the other vintage owners. Someone forgot to post it on CL so very few showed up....while I was waiting, I took some pics of my bike.

Andy I sure enjoyed the trip report.  I am used to the WI weather, but driving in that stuff you found is not for me.  So glad you and your bike got home in one piece.

Ray, what is the deal with the autograph on the tank?  Never saw something like that before.  Fill me in...

This is a nice read and will explain better than I can. Steve had his sandcast tank done and I had my K4 tank done. Kevin had his left sidecover inside done.

Andy, got your reply o n the other thread, thanx..

I was wondering if you were taking the bags/trunk off, for around town use?.. they are huge.. look like they sorts get in the way a bit..

Were they an off the shelf piece, or custom made?

looks like you could fit a German Sheperd in each one.. ;D

& they are built like a tank. big heavy metal ones.  make good crash bars ;) I think I would get some light plastic or leather ones for the daily commute.

Its funny that you ask Frank as I took them off last night and they are even bigger when off -these things are 45L each!! They are Jesse saddlebags - aluminum  - very expensive apparently - like $1000 for the two side bags. Lucky I didnt pay for them ;-). I kept the top box on for now - as it can store two helmets inside easily.

The saddlebags will be used for touring only.

cheers

A week after picking up the VStrom I took it to Rockport with May Lee (ML) on the back to assess 2-up touring.

We got about 1/4 mile before I told ML to get off and I firmed up the rear suspension. I had already adjusted the preload on the front. Both these helped a lot! Much firmer ride now and less diving when braking.

Acceleration was good. ML enjoyed it. She also enjoyed leaning against the top case. Most annoying thing was the chudder at low speed. Cant say if its the chain/rear wheel, fuel injection/throttle bodies, or just needing a tune-up.

First stop - Russel Orchards Farm

Lots of pumpkins....

and harvest pagan symbols...

then it was onto Rockport...beautiful day...

Spot the lobster traps..

bought a painting that was still wet...from local artist...$20....

saw this joke shop...spot the "Angry Mob Playset", the "Electronic Yodelling Pickle" and the "Bush and Cheney toiletpaper"

and then quick blast home in time for sunset...

Bike performed well but would really like to sort out the low speed chudder that makes it feel like a tractor....

Hopped on the CB750K2 and went to pump up the tires (27psi on both) - what a difference! Went for a ride around many corners/rotarys/straights etc and had a lot of fun....

Great day!
cheers
Andy
