Magpie/Cliff's K0 Project
« on: October 15, 2009, 04:11:16 pm »
Well, it's about time I joined the rest of you and documented my K0 project. It's 12/69 build and I've found a sandcast motor #260 that I'll use. The die cast motor that was in the bike is not seized, the sandcast was. The bike itself was in very poor condition, bent and far from original. I've been collecting bits and pieces and have torn it down to a bare frame which is at the painter's shop now. This is scary. The bike was given to me and I got the motor at a good price. So here's my start with a picture of the bike, the motor, my playroom. The tubs and shelves are loaded with many ready to mount pieces.
Wish me luck please.

Cliff!

Is this the one you're using that swing arm on?
I'm excited to see how it comes out.

yes, Brian, that's the one going on this bike. Thanks for selling it to me. It's taken a long time just to get this point and this may be a long thread too. I've been puttering away at it so this is a good way to keep me motivated about it.
Cheers,
Cliff.

I'm finding that documenting everything online with pictures is a very effective way of keeping the motivation up & not taking too many shortcuts (something I'm prone to do if left to my own devices).

True! I've done 2 K1's and have a good series of photos of them but this is the first time I've had the nerve to put myself out in front of everyone as I work through this one. I should have the frame back from the painters next week. Engine parts at the end of the month I hope.
Cheers,
Cliff.

And so it begins. the frame is back from the painter's and looks good. So good I'm going to get him to do some stuff I've done myself. Now it's a matter of emptying tubs of stuff I've been preparing for this day.
Cheers,
Cliff.

"Dear Diary", had a chance to putter about this afternoon so I mounted most of the electrics and laid out the wiring harness. I had refurbished the wiring loom, it came from Texas as my original was toast, derusted and painted the battery box, tool tray, electrics mounting plate and the ignition mount in the past 6 months or so. Mounted the coils too. I'll have to talk to Seaweb about posting bigger pictures. it's coming along.

I just click the pic to make it bigger. Frame came out real nice. Don't forget to wrap the frame in spots to protect it from the construction process. Especially when putting the motor back in. I would hate to see you ding up that nice paint job there Cliff. Even a dropped wrench on the frame can do some damage. I have seen some guys put water pipe insulation wrap on the frame. Really protects well.

Thanks for the tip! I was going to try the "drop the frame over the motor" install this time. I've done it the other way twice and it's no fun especially when the motor gets stuck in the frame. Just waiting on some engine top end parts prices to get started on it.

progress is painfully slow here. I got a good buy on 4 pistons, starter and clutch cover in nice chrome this week. So, as soon as the pistons arrive I can send the cylinders out for reboring to .25 over. This motor was badly seized and there are marks in the bores. The mechanics where I shop say it would be better to start with fresh bores.
Meanwhile I've rebuilt the master cylinder. I'm not sure if I should paint it because it's a bit scruffy but it still has the red inspection dot on it from the factory. Most of the pictures I've seen of early K0's have a silver or slightly polished cap on the cylinder so I'll go that way.
A few pics.
Cheers,
Cliff.

Correct Cliff...the KO had the silver type cap on the front resevoir. Below is a pic of mine and I also left it as it came. Click the pic to enlarge...

I think I answered my own question looking at my switches. I got this one in a bunch of stuff I bought from a fellow. He didn't know what he had including the K0 gauges. The switches are like new so the master cylinder is going to need a freshen up.

Pouring rain today so had a bit of time to hit the garage. I worked on the brake caliper and mount, finishing up on what I started in the summer. I'm not sure if I'll go with the polished caliper holder or not. I know it's not how the bike came but this will not be a "true" restoration. Can't afford it. I'll do the best I can do and improve on it as time goes by.
Got a new hard brake line from Honda for $10 ! but it was black so I fixed that up too.
Also installed the clutch in the motor but not sure if the pressure plate has meshed correctly with the rest of it. It looks right.
Cheers,
Cliff.

Last season I polished my lower brake line to a shine only to have to get rusty by end of season. This winter I'm updating all the brake plumbing. I replaced the polished line with an experimental SS piece I just bought off ebay couple weeks ago. Real nice made product for 30 USD. If you look, you'll see them still selling. I'm hoping to avoid the rust issues. I should have sealed mine last year I suppose. Your off to a great start. Looking forward to watch it come together. I'll post some pictures of my braking tomorrow in my build thread.
