GL1000 forks, now which calipers?????
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:15:41 AM »
I picked up a set of 1975 GL1000 forks, front wheel, and clamps to go on my 77 750K.  However, the guy didn't have the calipers to go with the package.  I started looking for GL calipers and whatever they cross reference with, which led me to some data that shows the calipers to be the same on early CBX's and DOHC 750F's.  Then I found some mention on CBX sites of upgrading the calipers on early CBX's to later model floating dual piston calipers.  Pretty much all I've been able to do is confuse myself more :D :D

Does anyone out there know what will fit ??? ???

Thankx!

If you want an easy swap you should decide between the CBX and dohc 750f calipers. The CBX calipers have a rather large single piston that will provide strong stopping power. The dohc 750f ones have two smaller pistons that will provide less fade than a single piston as well as increased braking. As to which will provide better performance, I'm not certain, I've yet to try either. I've got some dohc 750f calipers for my 78f but I won't be able to give any feedback for a long time, that bike isn't even in it's early stages of a build yet.

Other members may be able to provide you better, more concise information.

The 75-77 have a wider spacing on the fork lugs for the calipers than the later 78-79 have. The early calipers are specific to the early wings from what I have been told.

Someone posted that the GL calipers can interchange on the caliper brackets/sliders (that mount to the fork lugs), but I don't know for sure.

Oh, disregard my post then. I didn't realize they had different bolt patterns.

Thanks.
Heres a clearer pic showing the differences in the GL fork mounting lug spacing (75-77 on right/78-79 on left-converted to spoked wheel)

Thanks for helping me figure that out.  It looks like the later forks, with the closer spacing, will accept different calipers...
And I am sure mine are the early style...  Now to find some calipers!

Fish is the man! I banged his ear a bunch about this swap. Its worth it! And get a better master cylinder, 5/8. Unbelievable, the difference from my single 750 disk to the GL dual. I picked up a Hyabusa master off ebay for $40, Nissin 5/8, its square but it looks & fits on clubmans great.
