Valve spring booster shims
« on: February 02, 2010, 01:49:20 pm »
Hi guys. I'm looking for shims to set spring pressures in a 500/550 head. Minimum ID is 0.737" maximum OD is 1.050", and I believe I can live with some at 0.015" thick.

Does anyone have a more modern 4 valve head apart with shims that might come close? I HAVE finally just found a place (after many calls) where I can buy some that are 0.765"ID & 1"OD but wonder if I might be lucky enough to get something closer.

Thanks

With a shim punch kit you should be able to knock out .750 id and 1.060 od (if they go that big).
If there was a bit of demand, be easy to make a punch, or they could be made on a lathe..

Thanks Frank. I don't have a shim punch kit & it may be faster & cheaper to just buy these shims and run with em.

Brent,

They might not be cheap but have you tried DelWest in the USA? They do all kinds of shims and will make anything to spec. if it's not stock.

A CNC punch could knock em out fast, I assume you want steel if they are that thin..

I have done some, the problem is at 1mm they heat so quickly.

I've got shims on the way.
