How to disassemble Kerker baffle?
« on: March 15, 2010, 05:16:40 PM »
Got the megaphone off. The exhaust tip (cone) is on one end, end that goes inside the header has a slightly smaller diameter tube hanging out. The megaphone is angled, and the smaller tube is straight, so logic says it's not connected to the cone. I could be wrong. I tried banging on the straight tube a little, and prying on the cone a little. Neither budged.

well PB blaster works and prying on the cone... or in the past i've also had good luck with using a LONG extension and hitting the inside... and Driving the baffle out!

prying on the end might bend the edge of the megaphone.

So I'm looking at this picture, is this all one assembly? Does the whole thing come out the end like this? If so, I don't see why I shouldn't just beat on end of it.

So I pull the cone out, then the baffle section comes out seperate? Once I get the cone out, which end do I need to be pulling the baffle out of?

thanks guys

Depends how rusted in it is but the baffle generally comes out easy. Tap it out from the megaphone(strike the baffle from the end that joins the megaphone to the collector). You need a piece of wood etc to reach in there. The baffle cap can be a real pain to get out....you can try banging the whole assembly out if you soak the cap and heat it up well. Put the large end of the megaphone on top of an open vice so the edges of the megaphone are on the jaws (to stabilize it) and hit as described earlier

Great advice guys, a pot of boiling water did the trick.

Sooo, my baffle doesn't have the fiberglass wrap around it. Just a perforated tube of metal. Should there be some kind of packing in there?

I don't like the way this pipe sounds. Too throaty and a little loud. Will packing the baffle affect the tone? I really prefer the 'ween ween' of my MAC to the 'wrruuumm wrrruuum' of the Kerker.

with the packing removed it's a bit louder but still really quiet when compared with the MAC,

I'd guess that you're not looking to buy a new baffle but this is what is available from Kerker. It shows you how they come from them. http://dynoman.net/exhaust/baffles.html

You can get fiberglass baffle wrap just about anywhere.

The older Kerker had a bolt on the outside of the megphone that went into the baffle to hold it in.
These older baffles were just a short straight piece. I would just wrap it with house type insulation that would blow out after about a years use. Easy to replace.
I have never had to replace the wrappiongs on my newer Kerker so I have never looked inside.
The newer Kerker evidently does not have this bolt and the baffle is wedged into the megaphone.

fiberglass baffle material is easy to come by...

the sound is for how tite the material is... if you wrapped it titer it will assorb more sound but toooo tite and it wont absorb anything at all... you can adjust it for your liiking... your supposed to use regular masking tape to hold it together while you instert the baffle..

Man, this muffler is ass ugly. The MAC looks better, the angled Kerker looks dated, is too long and I really am unenthusiastic about the sound.

Anyone know of other sources for megaphones that will fit the kerker?

a 2.5" inlet supertrapp fits but because of the angle of the collector it sticks way the hell out, you'd need a short pipe with about a 15 degree or so bend in it. i hated the kerker too, lucky for me it got trashed in a lowside  :D

I see what you say about the angle. A straight megaphone is going to point way out there. But I'm measuring 2" on my pipe  ???

The Mac design is better looking, but the build quality of the Kerker is better. I've got each, and a bike to sell. Trying hard to decide which one to keep.
