Nice work....BUT do not over tighten! the cam chain when installing.

Is this compatible with your tensioner? (and do you have any tensioners done at the moment? It's the last thing I need to assemble my engine.)

It's not an "instead of" question, it was an "in addition to" question.  I ordered a tensioner from McGrew that I'm waiting on, and I asked if the non-spring-loaded setup APE had would compliment it.

As for APE... let's see... I have their crank studs, head studs, lightened crank, etc. It's not like I'm not doing my part. Sheesh

Jay, make sure you do some blue ones for a very confused Jon to match his blueturbo

Jon, you'll just need the other bit from Mark to have the best in cam chain management systems.

Mark, perhaps you can get some tensioners done in blue and get Mike to do him a billet block with a clear window in the back so it can be seen in Jon's engine.

It's the big air in your avatar Jon, perhaps some type of altitude sickness.

APE does not sell my tensioners, only the push rod adjuster.

THE APE set up should work, but I am concerned about the lack of rubber cushion in at the end of adjuster bolt, like OEM part has and the possibility of customers over tightening the tensioner and thus... the cam chain.


I still need to test this new part out in running conditions.

How do you know when it's tight enough or too tight ?   

You can do this by ear if you fancy a go - if it rattles it's too loose if it whines it's too tight. Install at a reasonable tension and then adjust when running in and out to get your first whine and first rattle then set half way. You gotta be brave to do it this way though

I had to do it kinda like this with my CR750 as the hy-vo camchain was too loose using the standard tensioner and a custom slipper tensioner blade, similar to those KOS sells. The engine seems happy!

AS per my instruction's included in the slipper tensioner box when I send it out. Let the OEM Honda spring put the pressure on the cam chain...it will be a bit difficult, but not impossible to duplicate this amount of pressure with a screw in bolt. I am working on proper procedure now with a similar tensioner assembly I have mocked up here at the shop. I hope to have the answer later next week.

Hi gang.The adjustment method I have always used that has served me well is as follows:Remove a tappet cap and turn crankshaft until the now visable rocker shows valve partway open.Loosen chain adjuster lock bolt,turn crank forward slowly while at same time tightening lock bolt.Next,check adjustment by moving crank a  little forward and a little in reverse while observing rocker arm.Adjustment is correct when there is no lag between crank moving and rocker moving.This procedure assumes that auto tensioner is not sticking.If it is,sometimes can be freed up by loosening lock bolt and moving crank a distance in reverse of normal rotation.   Rock On

Very well explained, but you are using a standard tensioner and that has a spring on it... to move tensioner bar in. This new device is a direct contact tensioner with no spring to tension and no pad or dampener to cushion back loading.
