Topic: sticking throttle

hello everyone! im new to the bike world, reallllly new. i just bought an 82 cb750k as my first bike. i noticed that the throttle sticks. if i barely rotate it, itll rev itself up to 4k+ rpm and stays there, then slowly work its way down. is this normal? what can i do to make it not stick? thank you for the help

I'm not to familiar with that year so bare with me. is the throttle physically sticking? can you manually twist it back? i had a similar issue with my 76. i just needed to sync the carbs. one was drawing way more vacuum and it was revving up. I'm not a mechanic but that's my advice.

1st item I'd check - throttle cable itself. Check that it is routed properly and has not been caught or snagged or has a kink in it. Also, with cable -it may be foobar'd. wire cable inside may be fraying. New cable is cheap circa $20. Only way I know of to check that is to remove it and once out - grab it and try to push/pull the cable through the casing - it should be smooth and not require force. Try some oil down the handle end of the cable - squirt it down the gap between wire and body - not easy - takes a while, keep push/pulling as you do this.

Good advice from nancy. I recently rebuilt my bike and used black cable ties to attach the throttle cables to the frame at a few points and I was surprised that after I did that, the throttle action was no longer smooth - it would stick, like you described, even though I had checked all the things nancy said and saw that it was working really nicely before I added the cable ties. I snipped a few of the cable ties and it was smooth again - go figure.

Sounds like it needs new cables.

Which is not a bad idea on a new bike, anyway, since there is no telling how well they were maintained.
