whining sound cb400
« on: July 08, 2011, 08:21:43 AM »
ever since ive owned it my bikes has made quite an unpleasent whining sound.

its barely there when i start it and gets worse as the engine warms up.

to describe it... it kindof reminds me of a car in reverse..

doesnt happen in neutral, only with gears enganged, and doesnt have to be moving so hold the brake and pull the clutch out a bit and you get the noise.

any ideas? or is this a trait of the bike? seems to me from moving my head around that its coming from the stator side of the crank..

thanks

Have you tensioned your drive chain too much? that can cause a whining noise.

this is a shot in the dark, but I had a whining noise issue that ended up being my tach cable needing some lube.

Drive chain correctly tensioned and no tach cable... Basically it only makes the noise under load, any other suggestions?

Thanks

The whine on my bike turned out to be my ex-wife. It has been gone a long time, now.  ;D
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Just a guess....bad bearing on the primary shaft.

Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

You might be able to locate the whine with the old screwdriver trick. Stick a screwdriver handle to you ear and the other end to various parts of the engine, and you'll hear local noises.

I've noticed this on the few 400Fs I've had. I just thought it was normal. The exhaust on the 400 is pretty quiet, so you might hear more engine noise than on other SOHC4s.
