Topic: Vancouver to Alaska, anyone done it?

I am seriously considering making the trip to Alaska with Godzilla.

I have most of September off work, and am hoping Godzilla will make it to Vancouver before the weather turns.  Has anyone been up that far North in September?  Will I freeze my ass off?

If Godzilla does not get to Left Coast by Sept, I am wondering if it is even possible to ride up there in October.

I have a lot of long distance experience on the CB, including lots of gravel and dirt roads. 

Money is tight, I would be doing this on the cheap and camping as much as possible.  Maybe riding solo, perhaps with my girlfriend (the relay t-shirt designer) on her Kawasaki.  Anyone else want to come?

I bet there will be a tonne of bears, I have my hunting knife and bear spray.  I could even take my dog in the sidecar for some added protection and company (and storage space).

Is there anyone to hand off too up there?  Or would it be a long trip to the post office?
Nome is closer than Anchorage....  Probably can't afford the ferry trip back, I hear it's expensive, but beautiful.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Ah shoot, I just left Vancouver to head home to Winnipeg last week on the same kind of trip (on the cheap, camping). I would have loved to extend the trip all the way up there. I met some guys coming down from the arctic circle on KTMs, they said it would be no problem to ride up to Alaska on my cb750. The rough roads don't start until you head up even further North I believe. If you do make sure you make a trip log post, I'm thinking of doing the same trip next year!

BTW Id do it next year on my CB750K4 if there is interest...July-August would be best. Id ship the bike from Boston to Seattle and ride up.

Ketchikan is good 'nuf in my book! It's only 1100 miles by ferry. Ya only need to run the rear wheel one full revolution on the ground to claim the whole state! :-D

Actually, if the goal is to get GZ to Alaska for this go-around, a ride to Hyder, AK from Vancouver B.C. should be doable in the time remaining before the weather gets serious.

Hopefully Godzilla will hurry his ass up, I'm no fan of snow and 2 wheels!
In the meantime, I'm headin out to the interior for some camping tomorrow.  Summer has been too short.

Still willing, but all of a sudden I got a #$%* load of work (film biz).  I'm booked solid until October 4th.  The weather's changed here in Van, all a sudden it's fall.  Been away from the board, so I'm a little out of the loop.

I have first hand knowlege of Aalska, mostly on the  boat,
prince rupert and campbell river ar the brightwst lights at night,none are on the Alkan hiway.From second hand all I can say is gas up every chance, and carry spare can as you might run out. People along the way can be helpful, and you meet the same crew of then daiy.
