How to stake/rivet solid-nosed master links?
« on: September 03, 2011, 05:44:50 AM »
I'm in the process of doing up my 1974 CB750 K2 (my first big bike :) ) and first off, let me just say how much I appreciate sohc4.com. The factory service manuals and forum-threads in generel have been incredibly helpful for a novice DIY mechanic like myself.

Anyway, I have now run in to a snag while replacing the chain and sprockets of the final drive.

I decided to go with the Xring-chain sold by DavidSilver, wich has a solid-nosed rivet-type master link, but I can't figure out how I'm supposed to rivet/stake it. I bought the Motion Pro Jumbo chain-tool, with the quad-stake accessory, but I don't understand how it is supposed to work. (Soft-nosed riveting I understand; press the dimple of the tool into the link to squeeze out the hollow nose).

Could anybody please explain how to stake/rivet a solid-nosed master-link (with Motion Pro Jumbo chain-tool)? (And I don't want to use the hammer and socket approach)

Btw, I have searched, here at sohc4.com, at sohc.co.uk, and on Google in general, but I haven't really found anything useful on solid-nosed master links. Hollow-nosed riveting on the other hand is very well documented...

We just discussed this in another thread. Seems z1Enterprises called the manufacturer on behalf of a forum member and they said you just press the sideplate on (with vicegrips) and runit like that! Scares me but there were other posters confirming this method.

I'll try to find the thread, but not till tonight.

Here it is:  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=94956.0  That was a cam chain discussion but I don't thing a drive chain would be any different..

If that be the case I am glad I have and will stay with a master link and press in plate and heavy clip.  ;D

Press side plate on and either buy the special rivet tool or, use a 4lbs hammer for bcking and a smallish ball pein hammer to rivet it over. It doesn't need much to be 100%

Thanks for the tips.

I have to admit that simply press-fitting the side plate without riveting the pins sound scary. Even if it works I would never be confident in the bike :S

I'll look in to that ball-bearing method, but might just end up buying a different chain...

I very carefully tack welded mine. (drive chain, not cam). 600 miles. no problems.
