Fairing progress pics
« on: May 24, 2006, 09:54:09 PM »
I've been working on making sturdy(yet lightweight) brackets for the full fairing that's going on my '75 Cb750. I'm using flat aluminum stock, and some aluminum channel. My first attempt resulted in ugly brackets that blocked my gauges and let the fairing bounce up and down like crazy. I just finished my second attempt tonight and I like the outcome. I think the brackets look good, and I took the bike for a ride around town with only the upper fairing (the fairing is even sturdier with the whole assembly, because of the extra mounts at the bottom) and I was glad to see that the fairing barely moved. I still need to make rearsets before I can ride the bike with the lower fairing. Here are some pics. Jimmy

P.S. In the last pic the fairing looks crooked. That's just because I didn't adjust it before I took the pics.

I'm after a vintage street racer look. Like something some guy in the 70s might have built to have a hot bike to look cool and haul ass. I had a red metallic picked out, but now I'm thinking red with big bass boat flake in it, with white flake stripes or graphics. Jimmy

Maybe do a flat color, like a real dark flat blue, or flat black is always an option. Flat colors aalways make bikes/cars look meaner/have more attitude. Maybe some wicked scallops on that fairing. If it were me, I would leave it just the way it is and ride it hard.

Great looking scoot, big thumbs up from team ProTeal buddy  ;D

P.S---> What kinda seat you got on that thing ?

I made the seat out of fiberglass. It cost me about $60 in materials and a lot of time. I just made a styrofoam mold and laid the stuff on, then used lightweight filler to finish it. Right now I am using cut down stock foam and duct tape for the seat. It's amazingly comfortable( I've taken a few 60 mile rides), but I'll be ordering some vinyl and foam soon. I just got the windscreen on today. I'll have to take some pics tomorrow when it's sunny, because this camera takes terrible pics with the flash. Thanks for the compliments. Jimmy

Since your fairing is similar to the mid 1970's Ducati 900SS, have a look at the way Ducati mounted it's fairings, there was a flat bracket welded onto the steering head to which was bolted the combined headlight bracket/fairing mount. This avoids the need for those large "brace" type brackets which detract from the look, and probably affect the steering lock?

There were some additional brackets mid way along the trailing "legs" of the fairing to support it there, that were mounted to the upper frame tubes, from memory. The screen, once fitted, was considered enough to brace the top "wings", but some guys made a small dia tubular "T" shaped brace that braced both wings and mounted in the middle of the steering tube top nut. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

I kinda wanted to go the route with a 70s era look/race ferring myself. I don't think I want to go with a solo seat or lowered handle bars though. Are there wind screens/ferrings that work and look good with a more or less stock seats and handle bar locations?

I can get full steering lock (enough for the bars to hit the tank anyway). I don't have access to a welder right now, so I drilled a hole behind the steering neck and bent aluminum stock around it, then bolted the two pieces together in front of it, and slid on a piece of aluminum channel. Here's a pic (the fork tubes are so pitted they leak out of the pits, good thing I'm picking up a Gl1000 frontend this weekend). Jimmy
