What are the rubber pucks

Can someone please tell me what the rubber discs that
go between the head and cover on my cb550 is for?

they cover the voids where the cylinder head nuts go down.

Yeah thats the ones.

So they must be reinstalled or oil will leak. This is probably obvious but I work awa,y so I'm not near the bike to look.
Was looking through  ffJMoore's post and that pic reminded me about them.
