79 CB650 Rotor
« on: May 26, 2006, 05:35:07 PM »
Can I use the alternator rotor off a CB550 on a CB650? I found one on ebay that if it'll fit, could save my budget on getting my bike going. Will this work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1978-Honda-CB550-CB-550-Engine-Rotor_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ10066QQitemZ4618776339QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

Edit: I don't see the copper slides in the pic of the 550 rotor. Mine has two slides where the brushes contact the rotor. Is there a way I can make this work? The cheapest rotor I can find for my CB650 is >$200! If I can use a $20 one I'd be driving the bike a whole lot sooner!

I tried cross-referencing parts and here's what I've found:

1979 CB650
-Rotor
--PN 31110-425-005 - $256.18
--PN 31110-426-832 - $256.18
-Stator
--PN 31120-426-005 - $179.05
--PN 31120-426-832 - $179.05
-Regulator/Rectifier
--PN 31600-426-000 - $161.54
-Alternator Assembly
--PN 31100-426-015 - $405.37
--PN 31100-426-832 - $405.37

I also cross-checked some part numbers from above and took these screenshots.

This is the only CB650 rotor I've found on ebay:

They want $179.99 + $10 for shipping. You can see the copper slides in the pictures. This is the only rotor I've found so far that actually looksl like mine.

I guess my real question is: Where can I get a decent-priced rotor for my bike??

The 550 rotor has no slip rings or field windings in it.

I've got a few rotors but one is off an '82 nighthawk and the other is an '82 standard (and unremoveable becuase the motor is off the bike).  Dunno if they would match up.

All the sohc 650 rotors will interchange.   Some of the dual cam 750s will too.
I dont think the 550 will work as the 650 has electronic regulator.

Why does the '79 650 have two part numbers for the rotor? Are there differences I should know about? How do I know which I have?

That'd be great! The rotor and RR are the only two parts keeping me from driving the thing to work every day. I'd really like to be getting 45mpg instead of my car's 16...
