Gas tank ? 550
« on: February 02, 2012, 07:32:33 AM »
I need to take the cap off for powdercoating. What is the easiest way to get that pin out? Or that rubber circle under the cap..I think I just need to get that out. If I take that pin out what kind of pin is that and how do I get it back in???

Thanks

If you look inside the cap behing the gasket you will see four (4) star shaped clips. Use a angled pick and it will work out.

As far as the pin I'll wait for replies as I have wondered about this also.

There like a spring clamp. they will fight you, trust me. Wedge one up, put a small screw driver in there, wedge another one. I have done two (2). Both fought me but I won.  ;)

The  pin is a long rivet.  Some have driven them out, but you have to be careful not to bend the tabs.  Others have carefully drilled them out.  You would have to replace the rivet if you drill it out, but might be able to reuse the rivet if its driven out.  Hondaman offers a stainless bolt and acorn nut kit to replace the rivet.

I'm wondering if I just try to take out the rubber part and say f it! ? What does that rubber part do? Will I need to replace it or what's its purpose?? Just curious if I can cut a corner and not replace that.

The rubber part is your caps gasket.  It keeps the gasoline from leaking out of your tank.  You need it and it should be in good condition.  If it is cracked you need to replace it with a new one.  Pry out the part that toytuff told you to, its easy to get out and pops right back in.
