piston freeing cocktails?
« on: February 12, 2012, 02:17:13 PM »
Typical humidity standing for ages in the cylinder thing, no heavy rust, but piston somewhat stuck.

head is off, left it with brake fluid inside for now, but willing to hear about other piston freeing cocktail ideas....

ATF/Acetone mix...it's proven to be the best.  The ATF is slippery, and the Acetone thins it enough to penetrate the stuck bits.

Marvel Mystery Oil. Pour it in a steel coffee can and heat it with a propane torch. Pour it down into the cylinder or drop a piston in to free up stuck rings. As a disclaimer I would suggest not to pour hot MMO into a plastic funnel FYI.

One last thing. The acetone really thins out the ATF so it can creep in easily. Once the Acetone evaporates the ATF becomes a lubricant again.  The problem is the Acetone evaporates very quickly.

You can help it get a better result of you can cover the cylinders with Saran wrap to slow down the evaporation and allow the mixture to creep in further.

I use both the acetone atf mix and on real bad ones that the atf acetone does not want to work on i use gun oil made by winchester it will creep in and derust at the same time but takes up to a week and is very exspensive 14oz is about 17 dollars and it has to be applied everyday till it is unstuck usually it takes 2 or three days but I do it with the head on and the plugs out and just try the kickstarter periodically  the saran wrap idea may be good with the heads off if you are desperate enough to go get gun oil wallmart carries it

ATF/acetone, a little heat from a propane torch, a 2 x2 and a hammer worked for me.

I didn't use the acetone with the ATF, but probably should have as it would have worked faster. The piston on my XL 350 was free, but the rings were stuck. While I worked on other parts of the bike, the ATF soaked in the bore/piston for about 2mos. One day I turned it over and compression was back. It didn't take long to hook up a gas line and she was running.

After feeding her enough ATF cocktails to be agreeable try gently turning her over by hand.  Avoid kicking you will get better results.

So the Worcestershire sauce worked, eh?  ;) BTW, I didn't just post that to be funny. Believe it or not, I got that tip from a friend who develops American Honda's in-house training modules. He heard it from one of their techs. I've never tried it, and no - I don't believe it, either.  ::)

If it actually works, maybe it will be good for constipation!

Worcestershire sauce.
It could work. The ingredients of a traditional bottle of Worcestershire sauce sold in the UK as "The Original & Genuine Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce" are malt vinegar (from barley), spirit vinegar, molasses, sugar, salt, anchovies, tamarind extract, onions, garlic, spice, and flavoring. The "spice, and flavouring" is believed to include cloves, soy sauce, lemons, pickles and peppers.

The molasses is known to work against rust.

I've been heating a set of 350 pistons and dunking them in ATF for months, I guess I need to break down and buy some acetone.

Are we talking about in the motor or out or either?  Mine are out, someone said beat it with a stick of hardwood.

Or a stick of dynamite.  Make sure it's the pistons that are stuck, and not the crankshaft.
