Protective Clothing
« on: May 07, 2005, 08:48:40 PM »
Hey All:

As I was driving thru the Santa Cruz mtns today I was watching all the bikes buzz around while driving my truck home -- still not done with my rebuild as I started a new job this week and had to work some OT....

Anyway, What do you guys wear to keep your skin on?

I haven't gone too crazy as of yet:

I have a nice Arai helmet, full face.
A hand me down "commuter" jacket -- has pads on elbows, back, shoulder.
gloves.
old hiking boots.

Don't have any protective pants, just wear jeans.  Am I stupid?

I'm trying to get a friend back home to sell me an old "easy rider" helmet -- just like Peter Fonda wore in the movie.  Wouldn't commute with it though...

Some folks probably think you're stupid for even riding a motorcycle, but then they probably don't have much fun either.  It's all about finding your own balance between safety, comfort, and practicality.  For me it's full-face helmet, leather jacket, leather gloves,  riding boots.  I don't have lower leathers yet, but I'd love to get some for those longer rides.  Wouldn't wear them for short trips around town, though.  Too much trouble, and if I made sure to always wear full leathers when riding, I'd end up taking the car a lot more often.  I know it's a risk, but it's an informed decision, and my decision to make.  Besides, the biggest risk you take every day is deciding to leave the house.

Full face helmet, gloves, Leather jacket with pads, leather over pants, tanker books, rain or shine.  Here in Oregon, it's mostly rain.

I wear exactly the same as gordon. The leather jacket is very thick and my movements are restrained, but I feel safe wearing it, as I know that if I fall I won't get any rash in my upper body. I wear jeans because, wherever I stop, I just remove my jacket and can go anywhere, but leather pants are more unconfortable.

They say that full face helmet doesn't restrain vision, but I can see much less with it than with my open-face helmet. With both hands on the handlebar (stopped), no matter how much I turn my head, I can't see the back of the bike. The other day I almost broke a turnsignal for handling the bike backwards and hitting a small post I didn't see. But I feel much safer with it, and my eyes don't cry because of the wind.

When I bought my leather gloves, the shop guy asked me what would I rather have: sensitivity or warmth. He said that the warmer the glove, the thicker the material and so less sensitivity. Feeling cold in the fingers is a painful experience, so I went to the thicker leather ones with middle Hipora layer.

Afterwards, I thought that if the glove is not thick enough, the fingers will become numb for the cold weather, so all the sensitivity will be gone anyway. I have two pairs, those ones for winter and another thinner pair for spring and summer.

A lot depends on what kind of riding I'll be doing. In any case, I'll wear heavy denim jeans and combat boots, and if I'm on the expressway or on a long trip I'll wear a full-face helmet and ballistic nylon jacket (with body armor in the back, shoulders and elbows). But, if I'm just buzzing into town I'll go with the James Dean-style leather jacket and three-quarter helet and goggles. I thought about getting a half helmet, but I couldn't find one with a snell sticker.

I have my father's old Leather Jacket, ca. 1985, with padding, a strap-on back protector, full-face helmet and gloves.
i'm wearing jeans for commuting but I don't leave the city limits without leather pants. I used my father's pants for 2 years but they don't fit perfectly so I just got me  new lower leathers with soft padding on the hips and removable hard protectors for the knees.

I just don't feel safe without them. And I wear boots since I'm 15, so I don't even feel safe with low shoes when I'm walking ;)

Cheers, Remi

Hey Guys:

Thanks for the replies.

I guess the only thing I feel vulnerable with is the lower part.  Not so much when I'm cruising around but the commute traffic here is a war zone.

I'd buy a set of leather pants but I'm in process of losing some weight and don't want to do it twice.  I've been thinking of getting some oversize carharts or something that I can slip on for the commute.

Seems like knees would be pretty vulnerable in a crash.  Mine are screwed anyway, but I've got some light knee pads that I use for skiing that I've been thinking of wearing under the work jeans.

HJC Symax modular full-face helmet.  "Joe-Rocket Racing" leather/mesh jacket with body armor for spine/shoulders/elbows,  Hatch "reactor" gloves (suede/X11 aramid/kevlar,  Ikon denim/aramid/kelvar pants, Cocoran side-zip combat boots....

It's hot down here during the summer, so I had to go with the synthetics vs. leather...still, very comfortable, and damn near bullet-proof (literally), with all that kevlar and aramid weave...

Shoei full-face lid.
Selection of leather gloves (depending on temps...cold digits are not fun...)
Killimanjaro jacket/pants combo for winter (with sweater/thermals)
Rider Wearhouse combat touring boots for long distance work, otherwise
an old set of combat boots or hiking boots for around town.  Never ride
without ankle protection.

For the summer: Joe Rocket mesh jacket (in flaming yellow) with
Draggin Jeans (normal levis reinforced with kevlar skid patches)  or Aerostich
roadcrafter suit in lime yellow (it's ugly...but people SEE you).

You accumulate a bunch of stuff along the way.  But, the idea is to protect
the soft bits.

I ride in the santa cruz mtns.  last september an SUV crossed the DY and ran right over the forks of my old cb550.  What kept me walking were my steel toe boots and leather pants.  If I stay around town i'll just put on the boots, jacket and gloves, whenever I leave town I wear full leather.  always with a full face helmet, I'd rather not lose my friendly smile from going face first onto the pavement.

I go strictly for mood and looks; sometimes I wear a Davida/goggles, sometimes an Arai. Sometimes Red Wings and leather pants, mostly jeans and walking boots. I have winter gloves and Smart Wool liners, but mostly I wear ancient Thurlow dearskin gloves or the elkskin ropers from Rider Wearhouse (those gloves are absolutely killer for almost everything, including moving furniture, trimming brush, etc).  I've banged my knees in jeans REAL HARD lowsiding in the mountains and got hit by cars in the city...
Listen- if you're going to wear leather pants and heavy boots- do it in the city! Jeans offer just as much abrasion protection as wet toilet paper (don't know what it's called in England- loo nappies?). You're more likely to get f*cked up in town than anywhere. In the country, some squid might overcook a turn, OK, once in a while I low-side because I forget I'm dragging an anchor/centerstand on a very old Beemer. Nobody turns left in front of you on the freeway (or you haven't been watching), no one goes through a stop sign from your right, etc. I'm certainly not saying to stop playing games, because riding is all about games/ fantasies/ being in your own little movie where you're the star. Just don't kid yourself that you're protected against abraision if you're not wearing full leathers, full face helmet, and thick, high boots.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I ride every day its above 35 and dry.  17 miles one way through town's busiest street and up to 60 mph on the good parts.  Black leather jacket made for motorcycles, chaps when its cold over jeans and just jeans when its not .  511 SWAT boots from a former life.  Leather padded gloves thermal for winter and mesh and leather for warm weather.  Denim shirt over whatever in summer when its hot.  Dual visor helmet 90% of the time.  Short runs for giggles are with a stupid half helmet.

I do my best to cover joints; ankle, elbow, shoulder, knee... in that order.  The gear is going to help if I hit the pavement and I do a fair share of local city/town riding so I pay attention to how I could end up coming in contact with the ground.  It makes sense to me that no amount of padding/leather/kevlar/ABS is going to help if I get broadsided by a car or bus, so ride safe and remember that danger can come "Anytime, Any Place, Any Direction".

Besides, the biggest risk you take every day is deciding to leave the house.

Full face modular but getting a new straight up fullface with dual visor. Leather/aramide gloves for warmer temps with knuckle protectors. Insulated leather suede gloves when colder. Textile jacket with ce armor in shoulders and elbows with back padding and think neck padding. Has a sip in liner for cooler temps. Works good till about 40 degrees at 70 mph. and no windshield. It is thick and well sewn.
just got some textile overpants with hip and knee armor with  zip in liner also. Very thick and strong textile.
Hiking boots. Sorry but I will not do steel toe or combat boots because I do not like the loss of feel that occurs when trying to shift or brake. That loss is capable of increasing the chance of an accident, especially when braking. So, for me, good leather hiking boots.

I know some prefer leather and say it is the best on abrasion but textile is also very good and has the benefit of being more weather friendly. I can put it away wet without worry. It has a wide range of temperature it can be worn in without making a person a sweaty mess. It is less expensive and still looks good.

I'm surprised this thread doesn't get more action. A local cycle shop was having a killer clearance deal on Shift kevlar riding jeans so I bought a pair for $50. Normally $100. Also got a pair of hard toe Diedhard shoe/boots. Not too big to shift the bike or walk around in them but sturdy enough to protect my feet. Leather gloves and jacket and hopefully no road rash for me.
