Kill Switch wiring question
« on: February 22, 2012, 11:02:26 AM »
 Bike is a '78 550K.

When I got the bike, the kill switch wasn't working. Someone had installed a "chopper" style headlight and all the factory wiring was in a big bundle, wrapped in electrical tape, behind the headlight.
I'm going back to stock and, luckily, I found the kill switch wiring intact.....sorta.

The black/white wire with the spade on it is coming from the kill switch. The diagram shows it plugging into a block to a matching B/W wire.

However, someone has installed this brown/blue jumper in that spot. Oddly, it appears to be wired into the dash panel; specifically, the neutral light.

Why would they do that? As soon as I have time and can get my test lights together, I'll trace it all out, but shouldn't the kill switch work if I plug it back into the block as it's supposed to be?
What about my neutral light? Do I need to find the correct wire that goes to the gauge panel? (I just started on this jumble of wires and haven't had time to go through it all yet.)

First off the kill Sw. Find a black wire the blk wires throughout the bike is Sw/power. That is they get hot when the key Sw. is turned to the on position. The black wire will feed the kill Sw. and comes out of the kill Sw. as a Blk/white wire. This black/white wire goes to a 4 pin muti connector then to a double bullet connector and feeds both coils

Why people do things I do not know.

Now the neut. light it also gets a black wire and a green/red wire the green/red comes out of the light and goes two places the diode and the neut. Sw. Hopes this helps ask any questions.
These colors are for a 1978 750k but should be the same for yours.
When ever I make a change I note it on the print and keep it with the bike. Makes it easy for me down the road and for the next owner.

The neutral light wire acts as a ground when the engine is in neutral.

I think the brn/blu wire is supposed to be the back lighting for the gauges (or maybe that's brn/wt), but regardless, it will most likely need to be connected to switched power once you feed the black/White wire that goes to the coils from the kill switch...at least if you want whatever it is powering to have power regardless of the kill switch position.

I hope to get out there with my test light in the next few days and try to figure this out. I just hope the kill switch still works.
