Mistake while lapping valves - need advice
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:06:34 PM »
Hello all. This afternoon I spent a good solid hour lapping my valves. During engine dissassembly I had bagged and tagged everything, inculding the valves: sequentially numbered for intake and exhaust. When I began to reassemble, I was horrified to discover that in the process of lapping, because I had the valve seats facing up, I had lapped the #1 valves to the #1 seats, #2 to #3 etc. So my question is - seeing as how I've mated the valves to the seats, even thought they're not in the original sequence, am I okay to leave as is? Or should I start over with mating the original #1 valves to the #1 position and so on? I'm not adverse to more work, but I'm worried that I'll be taking more meat off the seat unecessarily. Thanks.

I would think it might make a difference at the stem where it contacts the rocker. Maybe some one can say I'm not 100% sure

If after lapping the valves you can see a good sealing area that is in the middle of the valve face, not too high or low, then you should be fine. If the sealing surface is too narrow or too wide or too high on the face or too low then you need to address the problems which would probably mean having the seats re-cut.

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and reinstalled springs and then did a leak test and they appear to be sealing okay. So I'm going to go with it. If anyone else has any further advice, feel free to post still, as I'm still awhile away from putting the cylinder head back on.

The other thing to consider is the wear on the valve guides.  Ideally, you want the original valves in their original guides.  Probably not a big deal though.

+1 it is the seats that matter more with how they wear than the guides, if you recut the seats it doesn't matter which position they are placed in, if the seats look good just run them.

I would place the valve in the same spot that I lapped it in.  I'm a little overboard sometimes though...
