Leaky Fork Seal
« on: March 11, 2012, 08:32:03 AM »
Good solution although the story is not about my CB750. So I rebuilt the front end on my ST1100. It had leaky seals, weak springs, bad brakes, etc. After the rebuild I took it out for a quick 100 miles. I get back and one of the new seals is leaking pretty bad. I was very angry since the seals from Honda are $35 aside.

Looking for a solution where I didn't have to pull the front end I found the little tools called "Seal Mate" from Motion Pro. They are $5 a piece. Cheaper than pulling the frontend apart on that bike. I got the Seal Mate on Friday used the tool as directed. Went for a 200 mile ride Saturday and guess what no leaks. I am amazed.

I don't know if these will work in every case, but for me they saved me two days and $35. They are claimed to work on old seals as well. I Don't have tried them there.

I don't follow. If your original seals were bad and you changed them with Honda seals and your upper tubes are OK then that should have been the end of the problem- it should not have leaked further.

I think either some nicks on the uppers or tearing the seals on install is what might have happened in your case.

In looking at the video from the website it appears this fix is only for seals leaking do to dirt build up under the seal, not worn seals.

I've used the leak proof seals before with good success (they didn't leak) but you'll find many testimonias on the web to the contrary.

I've also used power fluid or ATF StopLeak with some success.

I've used them in 2 Honda vintage road bikes and several motocrossers with perfect results. I did find they added a bit more friction on my YZs. I've installed them for others with similar results. Can't find anything on this site by doing a search so they can't be that popular here. I like you can only go by my first hand experience with them. I understand that if you don't handle them correctly during the install they can be damaged. There is a warning on the instructions I had and you know how that story goes I suspect. :)
You should have found a reference to them in my build thread.  ;)
This is where i got them.

So there seems to be a lot of negativity towards the Seal Mate product. I just posted this with the thought in mind that it may help some. I now have over 500 all road riding on my ST and the seals are dry. The assumption is correct that this tool is for seals with dirt. I suspect somehow I got dirt in mine during the install. I am fairly careful so it is curious how dirt caused the new seal to leak. The fork tube is free of scratches, nicks, rust, etc. so who knows what the real cause was.

I will say that this most likely saved me from pulling one leg and replacing the new seal. So the $5 spent saved days and a few buck for a replacement seal.

Also thanks for the input on the Leak Proof seals I will try that direction maybe over the factory seals on the next project. I have replaced many seals of the years and this one is a first with a leak after the fact.

What this product probably did was seat the seats properly. It is unlikely you had dirt in there from what you said.
