Oil Change Question
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:03:18 AM »
I removed the drain plug in the engine, oil tank and removed the oil filter.

Just kinda took a look inside the tank, and noticed the oil line still full with oil.

Is this normal, maybe its clogged? I just don't know.

Any help is as usual much appreciated.

There is a check valve in the motor to keep all the oil from running into the case from the oil tank. This is normal.

Thanks Johnie, appreciate the quick response..............

I kinda figured, but I'm still new to these bikes and with it being Vintage, I'm trying to be as careful as possible.

As long as you keep that phrase(trying to be as careful as possible) in your mind Bud with these old bikes you'll be just fine. And another thing that should be on the top of your list is- If it ain't broke don't fix it ;) ;)

Just want to add to keep in mind you want to check the oil when it is warm. So many guys with these vintage bikes are not aware that oil will leave the oil tank when it sits a while. They come out...check the oil...shows it is low because some ran past that check valve...they add a quart or 2...take off on the bike...oil pumps out the breather all over the bike and rear tire which almost dumps them over. Just wanted to let you know.

@dhall57.........my thoughts exactly. If it ain't broke, don't fix it......cause it will create more work.

Once again Johnie....Thanks.......will do.

My intentions are to enjoy.....and then enjoy some more.

Which means... the best time to check the oil is at the end of a ride. Not after its been sitting in the garage for a week.
