taking apart 1982 cb650sc forks
« on: June 07, 2006, 09:18:56 PM »
my clymer manual doesnt tell me how to take the forks apart to service them.  It says to just take it to a honda dealer.

anyone give me advice on how I'm supposed to get them apart to replace the seals and such?

Depress valve to remove air, get your fork leg off. Clamp stanchion in soft jawed vice. extend fork leg fully and unscrew the top bolt, carefull of spring pressure at the last threads, withdraw spring. Invert fork over container and pump it to remove oil. slacken the allen headed bolt in the bottom, if damper rotates, temporarily refit spring and top bolt, if damper still rotates remove bolt and spring and insert a long piece of dowel with a chamfered end into the stanchion to engage damper head. have help to hold dowel firmly while undoing allen head bolt. Once damper rod bolt is out carefully lever  the dust seal out of the top of lower fork leg, then remove circlip and washer. Stanchion and lower leg can now be seperated. Push stanchion fully into lower leg carefully then pull out sharply as possible, repeat until oil seal is dislodged. Invert stanchion tip out damper rod and rebound spring. The oil seal, special washer and top bush can then be slid off. Remove lower bush only if renewing.
Clean and examine your bits, reassemble in reverse order.

thats exactly what i needed:)

im really beginnig to hate this cylmer book.  theres several sections it skips and says to just take it to the honda shop.  I though the point of the books was to do it yourself...

is there any special tools ill need to get them apart/back together?

I already got the forks off of my bike but was hoping to disassemble and paint the lower portion this weekend

rab1dwolf--

Happens I'm getting ready to do the fork seals on my CB650SC.  I scanned the pages from the factory service manual and will send them if you PM me your email.

You will find the round end of a broom handle very handy when trying to remove the bottom Allen bolt.

Or an impact wrench...
