Then it went to hell....

22 Miles outside Evanston the 650 started sputtering like she was outta fuel I was like what the crap I just filled up. Flipped to reserve and she was okay for about maybe 6 miles or so then I really started loosing power. Didn't see any smoke or oil or anything bad. Tried the signals and got nothing. She finally died on me 32.5 miles outside of Evanston. Luckily I was about 3/4 of a mile from a rest stop so I pushed her up the hill and called the wife. Lemme tell ya that was an awkward conversation. I had stuff to get me out of about every possible jam but this one. She agreed to pack up the foster kids and come rescue me. So while I was waiting I lined up a trailer so I could run up that night to get the 650. Which gets us here....

Sadly I never heard from any local SOHC4 folks in Utah GZ made it to my place on the 650 just not under its own power. Luckily I had scratched up a local buddy Joe Robinson who was going to come with me, so we did get GZ from WY to Northern Utah on two wheels! Well I wish I had more pics but the circumstances unfortunately did not work out well for me in that respect. And if anyone needs a 1980 CB650 Standard give me a shout I might just be pissed off enough to sell it to you.  ;)

Not yet I haven't had much time to check stuff out since I had the quick turn to get it up to Ofreen in Snowville. I hope to have a little time this weekend.  :P
The thing that kills me is I had three 90 mile round trips with my voltage meter hooked up to watch for issues and she was charging great so I am hoping a broken wire or short.  :-\

I think I will do some digging this weekend if I cant find anything after a couple of hours (I know the charging system on these bikes pretty good now). I will most likely just strip her down to the frame and do the build I have been wanting to do for a while. I will let you know if I find anything obvious CB but I think the main thing is I need to just break down and make a new wiring harness.

You should've pulled the headlight fuse... A push-start would've given you quite a few more miles on your dead battery.

Okay so after a crazy couple of weekends (had to put a new radiator in the wifes van and then help some in-laws move) :P I have found the source of all my frustration.  >:(

The Rotor in the charging system is shot. It shows great resistance when cold (5.4 Ohms) right in the sweet spot specs wise. When it starts to get warmed up it slowly decreases finally settling aroung 1.2 Ohms at full temp.  >:(

I found it took me about 45minutes of continuous riding to hit the 1.2 Ohms but I could see it slowly petering out. The Voltage however holds pretty good until you start getting below 4.2 Ohms so that seems to be why the damn thing looked good on my shake down rides before the relay hit. >:(

I had a pickup that would only go out when it got hot.    Riding with the cover was just enough to keep it cool.  Do you have a good rotor?

Lets talk about those accel rotors.   We just pulled Pauls 1200 apart for the 2nd time after putting one on. Going to hopfully finish it tomorrow  At least on the 650 you dont have to pull the engine.
On a good note my nitehawk lives again!!!!!!!!     It hauled GZ last year then I had issues with the tank.   Started right up after a 10 month layover.

Thanks Eydugstr for that price I think I will get the new Honda rotor from them.

CB650 so the Accel rotor has been cranky on the 1200 eh. Yeah price wise the folks at Rick's have a new Honda rotor for 20 bucks more and I have always had better luck with NOS parts on the 650. So I am thinking I will go that route to see if she stabilizes. I am going to try an hit some local salvage yards too and see if I can find a servicable rotor.

Yup that is true I had an old CX500 as my first bike very glad I never had to work on the charging system in that one you have to drop the whole motor.

I will keep you guys in the loop I am hoping to get the parts in July as I am broke till then (damn house payment) ::)

Okay so here it is the end of October and I finally got the moolah to get the bike done sheesh!  :P
I guess that is what happens some times.  :'(
Thanks to all the folks pulling for me I was able to get a used charging rotor from Wittom here on the forum and even got a regulator/rectifier setup from this post  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=12465 tons of help there so I can't call out everyone.
So I am getting 14.5 volts from 3000 rpm up and at 173 degrees Fahrenheit the rotor is holding steady!  ;D
But in other news being a parent for the first time via foster kids has been awesome this summer now fall just sucks up so much money that I could not keep up.
Keep the black side down and if I can come up with more backup riders I should be back in 2013 if we do another ride! (if I can't I think my wife would drive out to get me and shoot me on the spot this time  :o)

No 2013 Relay Rally planning as of yet but there are other reasons/excuses to ride too.  :)
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Maybe closer to May-June we can plan a meet up too just for kicks but I need to get some long haul on the 650 first to make sure she is reliable finally.
