Daniel, I'd like to welcome you, as those before me have done. I have to tell you, just like those before me have done, that your bike is definitely awesome!! That gas tank, the exhaust system, the rearsets, the seat, everything about your bike. The only thing wrong is that it's not my 77' CB550K! I'm ever so slowly working on building a 550 into that basic style. That gastank, it is incredibly awesome looking. Is there any way you could post details on it? The details of your bike really do make it an incredible looking ride!! Can't wait to see more pictures and details on it. Later on, Bill

As if I needed to add this but, WOW...... I love the look of your Cafe. All of the hard work you put into it really shows. That tank is unbelievable.

My goodness, I´m blushing now! Thanks for all your kind words!!

I´ll try to answer some questions:

amazing... flat out amazing...

what prep work did you do to the frame before powder coating? Are your Raask rearsets made for that application or did you have to modify them to fit. I am trying to find a good set of rearsets that are as close to bolt on as possible.

The only modifications done to the frame is that I cut the brackets for the mainstand off.
I sandblasted the frame and all the other parts that were powdercoated.
It was then zincprimered and powdercoated gloss black.
Last I put on a layer of powder clearcoat for extra gloss.

The Raask rear-sets are bolt on and they can be bought for your 550 too.
More info here:
http://www.raask.se/ind-eng.htm
I think there is an american retailer somewhere on the webpage.
The rear-sets are a bit crude compared to more modern stuff but they are quite comparable with Tarozzi set-ups.

I seconded on the BOTM board. Go accept Daniel! ;D

What is the BOTM board and what am I supposed to accept?

Thanks mate!
Of course I´ll try to post the details about the tank.
It´s sort of hard to explain when there is a slight language barrier but I do think I have a few cellphone pics of the build somewhere.
And it´s true what they say, a picture says more than a thousand words....

Hey nice bike mate, I've got a couple of dented old K tanks, so i might attempt a "cut and shut" like that, how does it mount at the rear now? Cheers, Terry. ;D

That is pretty much what I started with also ;D
I´m still using the standard rubbermounts to fit the tank.
I´ll explain more when I find the pics from the cellphone!

And finally, thank you all for your kind words! It means a LOT to read them and it really brightens my day!!
Thanks again!

Cheers
Daniel

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

BOTM = Bike of The Month.  I nominated your bike upon first glance.  Frankly, aside from the obvious aesthetic appeal, what is really capturing most of our attention and favour is the attention to detail you've put into the build.  Cleaning up one of these bikes is relatively easy given enough time and money, however most don't go to the extent you have in terms of refinishing bits.

Also, the modifications pay homage to the original style of the bike.  Very CR750-esque in some ways.  Keeping the Honda badges on the tank was a nice touch, as was keeping the original sidecovers and emblems.  However, I wouldn't add the factory-like pinstriping you mentioned if it were my bike.  I love the basic black look.

You can access the BOTM thread from the main forum page.

When I first started thinking about stretching the tank I thought I would make a "cut & shut"-job.
I bought a beat-up tank and started measuring to find the widest and highest point of the tank an the gut it along that line.
That way one would be able to fabricate a "straight" piece of sheetmetal at the right length and TIG-weld it in.
Unfortunatly, due to the shape of the tank, the line that I wanted to cut along turned out to be very complex.
That also meant that the fabrication of the extensionpiece would be hard to get good enough tolerances on, to be able to weld a fueltight seal.
A few other problems like making a rear mount for the extended tank made me go back to the drawing board.

The solution came in bying another beat-up tank.

I left the first one untouched after cleaning the inside with citric acid and stripping the paint from it.
Then I cut the front end off of the second tank and carefully grinded the edges until I could place it over the rear of the first tank with at good fit.
When I was happy with the lenght and the tank was straight in all directions, I welded the two parts together.

This way I got to:

1. keep the standard rubber rear mount.
2. make no alterations to the frame to mount the tank
3. be able to switch back to the standard tank in a minute if I want to
4. not have to worry about fuel leaks through the welds or mess around with tank sealers

Then came the hardest part: to mould the tank into shape.
Spent many hours sanding......
As I´m a cheapo I wanted to do all the work myself and as I wanted to paint it gloss black I knew it would have to be perfect before I could hand it in to the paintshop.
The only real setback came when I did the last prepwork before paint with 800 grit wet sandpaper.
Suddenly the table a was working on collapsed and the tank fell 4 feet into the concrete floor! >:(
Doh!!!!
Nothing else to do but start over again.... Didn´t laugh that night.

Anyway, that was how it was done and I hope this story answeres some questions!
Feel free to copy the method!!

Oh ok Dan, so the rear piece is just a "dummy" and doesn't hold fuel? Fair enough mate, it would have been pretty difficult to make that tank extension a "practical" mod. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Dan, I've seen fiberglass tank covers that give the impression of a longer custom tank but, when you could find one, they sell for high dollar. The idea of an aluminum tank is out of my price range but your design gives me hope that I can have the look I want after all. My hat's off to you. Hope you don't mind if your tank idea starts popping up on some of our bikes. I definitely would like to do this on a 550 and on a CB450K7 that I have. That's just one of the things about this site. A person can build his own look by using one or more features of all these great looking bikes on this site and still have an individualized bike of his own.

Yep, thats right! Perhaps it´s like cheating a bit but I didn´t need to carry 6 gallons of fuel to be able to race to the nearest café ;D

I have never seen any fiberglass covers except for full bodyworks like Dunstall and Muscle Machine.
And they don´t look anything like the stock tank.
And yes, feel free to use the idea, that´s why I´m showing it to everyone. I really like the long tanks of the 60´s cafe era, it really transforms a bike!
I guess one would like to keep ideas to oneself if it was a business one´s running.
It´s not for me and if this idea can help someone else to build the bike in his/her vision, it´s great!

Thanks again for all the great comments!

Cheers
Daniel

P.S. The bike (and me :P) was photographed this weekend by a swedish motorcycle mag. Great fun that the bike made it into the mag but how the hell can anyone want to be a professional model??
I was in agony all the time, just by sitting on the bike looking like a fool! They´ll probably drop the whole article when they see the freak ON the bike.... Damn.... D.S

A loose nut behind the handlebars can really kill the look of the bike. I was going to suggest airbrushing, but perhaps a roller might be better?  ;)

A roller sounds good to me! ;D

Make sure and post those glamour shots when they come out ;D

Hmm, well I´ll take a look at first and make the appropriate mods before I´ll post them here. ::)

Glad you like it! I don´t quite get what is meant by "non hack and whack" though, never heard that expression before?

I cruised Carpy`s CB 750 cafe webpage today and saw that he´s got a new project up and running.

His writing something about a "gastank stretched 5 inches" and he has kept the rear exhaust hangers, that he most often cuts off, on the frame .

I sent him a few pics of my caferacer about six weeks ago, perhaps I could give some inspiration back to him ;)
He has certainly inspired me!

That´s the great thing about the Internet, one can learn and get inspired in such an easy way, and one can get in touch with people on the other side of the world to share knowledge and experiences. And it´s all just a mouseclick away..... Love it!

Cheers
