74 CB750 K4 - stock sans Lester wheels and 4-2 pipes

I broke the clutch lifter plate while swapping out worn clutch springs... Rookie mistake... Read those torque wrenches carefully boys....

While waiting for a new lifter plate, the bike was in the garage. It took three weeks for me to get a plate, not to have it ordered and delivered mind you, just work, checking salvage, checking ebay etc... I received the new plate yesterday, installed it this morning and the clutch is "Mo better" than before, nice and stiff with no slippage.
However.....
I took the bike around the neighborhood for the test ride and when I returned, she was leaking fuel like nobody's business.... On initial inspection, it appears to be leaking in between carbs 1+2 and in between 3+4 the hardest places to see of course....
My garage is COLD... I have 2 air conditioner feeds and the garage is half underground in the basement of the house. I keep my tire pressure at about 30PSI and the bike is an everyday rider. The reason I mention the tire pressure is I checked it before the test ride and it was at about 20 lbs. hmmm......

I did not drain any of the fuel from the carbs before I parked it for three weeks....

I'm thinking the floats or the float valves are stuck..... What say you?????

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated....
Phil

Stuck floats, float issue like worn parts that don't seal. Turn that little valve that comes off your tank 90o and you won't have to worry about it for a while  ;)

HA! Right Jerry... To bad the dang thing is on the throttle side.... I know.... I can take the petcock valve off, seal the hole with some chewing gum and JB weld, drill a hole on the other side of the tank install the petcock on that side and just give her a twist every mile or so.
THANK YOU BROTHER! Problem solved. ;)

I'll pull the bowls here in a bit and see what gives....

Yeah, leaving the tap on (always recommended to turn it off when parking) and parking on the sidestand (worse, but it can still happen on the centerstand) is another "rookie mistake" that can lead to stuck float valves.

That may not be your problem, just saying.

If it doesn't get run a lot, I'd run the prescribed amount of SeaFoam thru it. That'll devarnish your carbs internals.

After re-reading my post I see it doesn't really address your problem. But I'll leave it just for what it is.

The SeaFoam may help, but is not a replacement for removing the bowls and cleaning.

Understood, I have always had a VERY small leak when ever I leave the fuel valve on so, I do turn it off. When ever I stop.
Now that you mention it.... I have not run any seafoam in there for a while.... A couple of thousand miles I would guess. This bike is an everyday rider. I would not think it would varnish up in a matter of three weeks, but that is just an assumption on my part. It could happen.

I'll finish watching Oprah and eating my bon-bons then get my lazy butt of the sofa and check it here in a bit. I'll post results for those that may be interested....
Thanks fellas,
Phil

About that lifter plate. Even pro's break those . There is a trick to getting them on without breaking them. As you tighten the bolts keep tapping it and wiggling it so the parts stay lined up.

Luckily so many get broken you can still buy them.
They should just stamp them from steel.

Time for some Viton o-rings maybe, if it still leaks after turning the petcock it is either the orings or the t's are cracked.

Well,
While watching Oprah and finishing off the bon-bons... Some elves must have come and fixed it for me. :o

Viton o-rings is next on the list when I have to get a little more invasive with the carbs.

I took all the bowls off, and the inards were as clean as I had hoped. I gave each of the floats a little up and down just to make the valves were working and it appeared they were. I got back on the bike another quick trip around the neighborhood and no leak. I parked it on the side-stand with the petcock on and assumed the position.... Not a drop after 20 minutes.....

I figure the float valves might have been stuck.... and just dumping fuel in the bowls. and maybe, just maybe my overflow tubes are suspect. The little wire clamp was not on the "post" of the drain tube. Dang PO.... Oh wait.. I rebuilt the carbs this past December... DOH!

After my number three son's symphonic concert tonight, off to the wilds of Shelby county Alabama for decent run.

Thanks for the input - Case closed... for now.

A little debris in the fuel can make the float valves stick sometimes.
