Nearly nailed a crotch rocker today
« on: May 10, 2012, 05:30:45 PM »
Was driving 50 mph south on PA 41 when out of the corner of my eye I spotted Mr. Crotch Rocker (CR) on the side street, which had a stop sign. He completely ignored the sign, neither looking left nor right and blasted straight across a major highway doing at least 40 Mph. CR was appropriately dressed in sneakers, shorts and open shirt( however he did have a helmet).  If I had not spotted him( I drive a car like a motorcycle in that I surmise no one sees me) and slowed down I would have hit him broad side.  I don't think CR ever even saw me :o and certainly doesn't realize how fortunate he was.  BTW, crotch rocker is my term for a squid on a crotch rocket...Larry

On Monday, I watched an R6 rider: sneakers, shorts, t-shirt, full helmet, coming the opposite way and looking over his left shoulder. He drifted into the left turn lane.

On my left, a lady and her pal, chatting it up, signals for a left and starts to move into the left turn lane.

When they passed, each halfway into the left turn lane, there couldn't have been more than inches between them, and I don't think either one saw the other.

Can't tell you how many times I've seen riders (crotch or cruiser) act a fool in traffic and when being recklesss, almost run into someone that is just driving regular and then give the "WTF arm wave". Makes me mad because they were driving like a$$hoes, but then have the audacity to call the car at fault. Just gives bikers in general a bad name. Most of the time, they are wearing the approved SQUID gear, so that just made me think about it. Rant over.

That seems to be the norm for most drivers of cars and trucks, too.  The other driver does something stupid/dangerous and gives you the finger because you had the nerve to be in their way when they were doing it.  Most people probably only remember the motorcyclists who act that way because they can all be easily placed into one group.

That's a great statement! I also feel the same way.

I ride a GSXR and Hayabusa regularly, and I don't feel that the bike makes the rider. To me it's more like younger, inexperienced riders who still feel invincible are drawn to these type of bikes. The bikes themselves do a very accurate job based on rider input, that's what I love about them.

I agree with that as well! I really make an effort to watch body language of drivers. I can spot the impatient ones a mile away and just slow my roll and let them get or stay ahead of me. My daily ride is an Aprilia Tuono which is comfy but plenty sporty!

wow that's scary.  and i'm in agreement with all this - you can tell when someone's "impatient" -- i was behind a guy on a road bike the other day who was  fidgeting with everything at the stop light and was driving really agressively, dodging traffic.  i just gave him a wide berth so i didn't run over him if he laid it down.

PS - what's a "squid"?

I think "Road Rage" is more aggressive in some area's rather than others...and it makes people stressed and start to do dumb stuff to break free from them.

they say 44% of motorcycle fatalities dont even involve another vehicle. I think that says something.   I was just reading some interesting literature by the dept of highway safety...

http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/810834.pdf

excerpt:

In two-vehicle crashes between a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle in 2005, in 1,334
(74%) of the crashes the motorcycle was recorded as the striking vehicle, compared to
470 (26%) of crashes where the passenger vehicle was recorded as the striking vehicle.

A comment on the less important part of this thread; I'm thinking "crotch rocketeer".  But maybe that make it sound better than they(the crazies) deserve.

What are you trying to say with this excerpt?
Who hits who does not indicate fault.
Out of three fatalities that I knew, 2 were of the rider hitting the car and both were the cagers fault.
One was younger and one was old and wise.
The 3rd was old, wise recently divorced and drunk, he crashed solo.
I'm in that 74%. Hit a cager turning left across my lane.

Good thread, I don't wanna rain on the parade.
Just sayin add some background to that excerpt.
Austin is just thick with young kids on scooters in shorts and flipflops,  crotch rockets too.
I see all that bare skin and I just go OUCH!

We call the "temporary Australians here"    :o

I was with my boss on the way to work one day when we came to a stop on a very crowded motorway just outside Brisbane, we were on the left shoulder {we drive on the left side here} and completely stopped for around 5 minutes, there were even people out of their cars, a truck had rolled about a mile up the motorway. I decided to open the passenger {left front} door of the truck to get out and stretch the legs when this idiot on a crotch rocket went passed me at around 50MPH, the shoulder is only around 4 feet wide and has about a 30 degree drop of around 30 yards straight into a hardwood forest, my door missed the fool by inches {1 or 2}  he would have been another statistic if he had been half a second faster.....
