CB650 Discontinued oil seal
« on: May 16, 2012, 10:38:45 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm in dire need of a new drive shaft oil seal for my 79 CB650. My old one was leaking pretty bad and got destroyed in the process of removing it. Now I'm stuck with a hole in the engine that needs a seal before I can start riding again, but my local Honda dealer informed me the part is no longer available.

Oil Seal 36x57x13, part number 91205-426-013.

If anyone has a source on these or can help me track down one from an old engine your help would be awesome.

Regards,
Iain

Have you tried a local bearing house? Most also sell seals in addition to bearings.

When a Honda dealer says a part is no longer available means NOTHING!

For instance the clutch pressure spring for my VF1000R was no longer available and I just used one from a VF1100 SAME PART different number. Same engine block.
The part measure exactly the same to .001 thousands in every way.

Those two engines were basically the same.

Matter of fact you can go to any bearing supply house and get that oil seal at a fraction of the price.

Also another model of Honda,Yamaha ,Kawasaki,or Suzuki would work.

Same with needle jets. one float needle fits thousands of motorcycles.
Some people have even developed cross reference lists.

After 40 years I have found that the reason people like Harley Davidson is that you can get enough parts to build a 1936 harley Davidson. Crankshafts etc.,.

And many companies make the parts.

On the other hand Honda is like an American car company. They keep making new models and discontinueing others and then you cannot get parts. The old "Cowboy Economy".

My searching the internet has not lead to me finding anything compatible. Seems all the other SOHC4 bikes used a different size seal and I could spend days flipping through other part fiches trying to find one.

If a local bearing place might have one, would they be able to identify it just with the dimensions I provided? I suspect there is more to this than just using any old seal but I could be wrong.

I am not surprised.

You can get the oil seal by going to a bearing supply. Go there, meet the people.
Oil seals are  usually for engines.
The specification is metric or SAE.

Metric would be inside diameter.
Outside diameter.
thickness.
Type of seal material.

Trust me a bearing supply can help you.
You need to get of the computer or cell phone and interface with reality. LOl..lol

If you have a pair of  calipers and you measure ID and OD you probably can look it up online, but the bearing supply house personal are much better at it.

if you have the old one, go to a pump/bearing supply house for pluming&heating industry. Make sure it's clean so they can see the number on the side. Try not to tell them it's for a motorcycle, or they may just not bother. In new york, I always get my seals from a local place.. and they never ask what it's for, they just match up the old one. Also, it's about 40% cheaper.. I get all my fork seals from them too.

Local dealers don't have much old stuff on hand, or have a parts guy that's interested in looking up "antique" stuff.  Search the online vendors with OEM catalogs.... using your number, it took me 20 seconds to find it....

http://www.westernhillshondayamaha.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=123459&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1979&fveh=2951

$20.62 + shipping to your door.  :D

Here is another online vender ... there are more, basically they can order most anything that's still available, your local Honda shop could do the same thing, but it's easier to say that bike is too old.

Hope this helps...

Haha, seems these threads often turn into a "google it" pit.

The part is indeed no longer manufactured by Honda, and even though many websites list it with those generic parts lists, when you actually contact them they can't get it.

I did manage to track down a few, however they are expensive and low on stock. One of the few examples is CMSNL.com who last I checked had 4 left in stock for 20 Euro plus shipping to Canada. Pretty pricey.

Long story short these are hard to find, but with the help of some members I've been pointed me in the direction of a local bearing shop who can indeed help me. Just needed some guidance where to look.

@Lucky I should have taken you up on that bet. I can confirm for anyone wondering that they are not the same. The 550 uses a 33x57x7 seal

honda use a lot of odd ball sizes with seals so you have to use their part, the thickness isnt as important as the inner and outer od,take your old one to a bearing supply and see if they can help.

Jerry H and others,

Not likely many of the items you see on that particular page are available. That's the problem with sites that use that microfiche system. It shows parts and parts numbers, not availability. I've order probably close to 1000 OEM Honda parts and I always use one of the sites below before I actually order whether online or at my local dealer. 90%+ of what I do end up ordering shows up.

Here's a couple I use that DO show availability from the Honda parts warehouse:

www.motogrid.com

www.bikebandit.com

It's true Jerry G. I prefer to order Honda parts when I can, but I just can't get this one it seems. I've got a few different size seals on the way now so one is bound to fit good enough.

That seal does only fit the 650 and i will bet it is a double lip seal which will be difficult to find from a generic seller, you are better biting the bullet and ordering from CMSNL BUT before you do ring Ed at Western Hills Honda as they do actualy have in stock (Or can get) a lot of the old discontinued parts---he got me the rare center selector for a 500 6 months ago AND only charged the list price
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Ordered a double lip seal with dimensions 36 x 56 x 8mm. Popped in easy as the OD was slightly smaller, so I glued it in with a "healthy" amount of liquid gasket and once that was set, a good coat of clear silicone. We'll see how it lasts but a couple hundred km and its still not dripping.

Dave: Was it you I ran into down on Queen St a few weeks ago?
