oil filter bolt
« on: May 27, 2012, 06:42:24 PM »
So I have searched and there are quite a few posts about the oil filter bolt being stuck.  I am confident that the oil filter is at least decent to last another cycle, but what I am curious about is if I need to get this filter out in order to get out the remaining oil from the engine?

I took out the oil plug from the bottom of the engine and the reservoir (in the process spilling oil all over my new buildings unsealed wooden floor) but when I went to take out the filter bolt I literally snapped my socket extension nipple off.  I put some liquid wrench on it but figure that since its sitting in oil it won't help much.  Maybe I can take it to a mechanic and just say all I need is for you to take this off.

Back to the original question, before I fill up the bike with fresh oil, should I get the filter off in order to get the remanding oil out or have I gotten it all out?

I believe anyone here would advise you to replace the oil filter. Dan

yeah, I just got it off.  Thanks to my gator-grip socket.  My 12mm kept slipping so I was scared I would round it off.  It came off with a pop but I checked the threads and everything was good.  Not a lot of oil came out like I was expecting so I replaced the filter but the o-rings still looked brand new.  I think everything was changed by the PO before I bought it.  I took it to snug then about 1/4 turn tighter as I don't have a torque wrench.  I think I'll let it sit till day light before I fill it up incase I remember to do anything else.

You may want to buy a new one before that one gets chewed up too bad.  One of my 350F's oil filter bolts has a head that's like 17mm or something...

The threads should be fine as the "stick" occurs between the bottom of the flange of the bolt (steel) and the cover itself (aluminum.) You are correct, IMO, to only tighten enough to keep it from leaking, no more. A dap of antiseize under the flange is whats called for.

The part that stick's is not "batherd in oil".

The aftermarket bolts with the larger hex's are not so you can tighten it tighter, heavens no. Just so you can get a better grip.
