Polynesian Blues & Starting a New CB750-K1 Project
« on: June 02, 2012, 06:19:27 PM »
So, I picked up another CB750-K1 last month. Just received my order of the complete set of OEM exhaust [yes, the correct '300' series]. I know it seems kind of backwards to buy the exhaust first - as they are one of the last few parts to go in the finished project. But since these can be difficult to track down, and I'm more of a purist when it comes to restoring one of these, the OEM exhaust is a must-have in my book. As soon as I finish documenting the bike as it sits, the full tear-down will begin. Does anyone have any leads on Polynesian Blue paint for the K1 series? I'm told if I can come up with a part in that color, my paint guy can match it. I discovered that both the 750 and CB450 were offered in that color in 1971. The only thing I've found thus far is a side cover on eBay that the guy wants $290 for... There's gotta be a better (cheaper) way...

You sure you want to paint it blue? I think it might clash a little with that seat ;D

Paint it blue! Are those pipes from your Honda Dealer? Any problems with quality?

I too have a project K1 that I plan to paint blue and have run onto the same brick wall.

Was planning on just finding the closest match as possible unless we can come up with a better solution.

And I am a purist too, already have a period correct Kerker that will go on it!

hoodellyhoo > Yeah, I can't lose that seat fast enough (it has a nasty smell to it as well)! Fortunately, the original take-off was included in the deal. It's in very good condition, too! Don't know if you remember, but you sold me that 350-F exhaust system. I recently sold both that exhaust & project bike they were going on to focus on this one.

bender01 > Yes, via my local dealer through Honda-Direct. We inspected each pipe when they came in. These are OEM, not reproductions.

stev-0 > One suggestion I got was to go with the Honda Candy Sapphire Blue (readily available) and seems to be very close to the polynesian blue. I also came across an automotive color, 1984 Mazda Miata - Winning Blue, which seems close as well - but I'm worried that it may not have that 'candy' look to it. Please keep me posted on your color quest and I'll do likewise.

Thanks. These codes also appear in the OEM parts listings for the painted parts of the subject model(s). From everything I've been able to find, these codes are pretty much useless to any other paint mfg/shop as they only mean anything to Honda and Honda doesn't provide vintage paint. As to the part listings, I've identified the following OEM parts in Polynesian Blue:

CB750-K1: -Headlight CASE *PB9M*  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 61301-300-020EG (replaces 61301-300-010EG)
-COVER, R. FR. FORK  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 51602-300-672EG
-COVER, L. FR. FORK  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 51606-300-672EG
-COVER, BATTERY *PB9M*  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 83600-341-701EG (replaces 83600-300-030EG)
-CVR, OIL TANK *PB9M* (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 83700-341-701EG (replaces 83700-300-030EG)
-TANK, FUEL *PB9M*  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 17050-300-040EG
==================================================
CB450-K4
-Headlight CASE *PB9M*  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 61301-292-020EG
-COVER, R. FR. *PB9M* (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 51602-319-000EG
-COVER, L. FR. *PB9M* (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 51606-319-000EG
-CASE, R. *PB9M*  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 17231-294-020EG
-CASE, L. ??? (unable to document)
-TANK, FUEL *PB9M*  (POLYNESIAN BLUE METALLIC) 17050-319-671EG

Obviously it would be more cost effective to locate a fork cover or headlamp bucket than a gas tank... but this is as far as I've been able to get. No luck with the usual places such as CSMNL, David Silver Spares, Western Hills Honda,  Ohio Cycle, etc...

If anyone knows otherwise on any of the above, I certainly don't mind being 'educated' - Thanks!

I've checked w/him and it's not a color he currently has. He suggested that I find a part in the correct color so he could reproduce [see previous entries in this thread]. I have seen the two-part spray cans for this color on the European eBay listings, but I'm not confident that they would be correct - again, if I'm wrong in any of this, don't hesitate to speak up. Just looking to get more informed....

Hmm, apparently it's almost impossible to exactly match any OEM Honda color prior to 1982.
http://www.ct70paint.com/paintcode-history.html

Interesting. I'm glad a similar situation doesn't seem to exist with American automobile paint codes.

I remember coming across a similar post/thread somewhere else a long time ago. I guess I was just hoping that there had been some amazing discovery since then that would have addressed this color's availability. In looking at all the various input I've gathered thus far, it looks like the clearest path is to just go with the Candy Sapphire Blue. It looks pretty close to the Polynesian Blue that I've seen on some of the YouTube videos for K1's over in Japan. Since it seems there is no exact match possible possible, I don't think it's all that huge a sin to go this route. I just have to wrestle the perfectionist in me into submission...

That’s a nice and rarely seen color on the USA market 750 K1 as it was short lived and used from frame number: CB750-1044650 to 1055209. Interesting enough, it was sold in all other markets except the USA until the end of K1 production. By the way, Polynesian blue is a metallic and not a candy color that needs a traditional silver base coat. I have owned both colors in the past and it’s very close match to the K2/K5 Planet blue metallic, just a couple of shades darker. I would loosely describe it as planet blue with a touch of black mixed in.

Anyhow, this suggestion is going to be a long shot .... :-\

Here’s a paint source found in the UK for the Honda 750 K1 Polynesian blue metallic:

http://www.rsbikepaint.com/en-us/colours.php#makeid=59&modelid=275

If the direct link above doesn’t work, use: http://www.rsbikepaint.com and search for:

Make: Honda
Model: CB750K
Year of production: 1971

I can't vouch for the paint color accuracy, quality or service because I haven't personally tried RS bike paint Ltd. However, they seem to have a good reputation on the UK forums. This is probably a last resort option as shipping paint from the UK can be an expensive proposition. This is the reply I received about shipping paint to the USA when inquiring about another Honda color:

Hi Hinomaru,

The difficulty we have is that as many of our paints are classed as dangerous goods, they have to be shipped by courier.........who charge a ridiculous amount to ship to the USA. However, if the paint you requrie is in small touch up quantities or is water based in formulation (we can check this for you once we know what colour you are after)...then we can use the regular post.

Perhaps if we know how much and what you need, we can see if we can help!

Many thanks,

Heidi

Hello neighbor!  Just saw that you are in Rochester, NH too.  If you see another 750 riding around town that is either brown, orange or red, that's me ;)!  Not too many 750's in Rochester.  As a matter of fact I don't think I've seen another one.  Good luck finding the blue paint and with the resto.  I LOVE that color!

Out of curiousity, did you get those pipes from RMS?  Was wondering what you paid if so.

Hino - I believe you have posted a pic on a poly blue fork ear in another thread. Is that just a pic or do you have that part?
If you have it (or if we can come across one) could one of us get it color matched and then have a custom color number for it? And then it could be passed along. Longshot...

Stev-o,

It’s just a pic I lifted off eBay to help support that thread reply. I do not own the fork ear, here’s the original eBay listing:
