Hey, i just had a light bulb go off in my head !   ::)    I don't have a vw distributor with me, but i was wondering if you could just flip the counter weights over in the other direction on the advancer  to make it work on the reverse rotation ????   ???

Mallory made distributors that rotated CW and CCW and by swapping parts (inner parts from a CCW dist and the body from a CW dist) you(or Mallory) could "make" an 009 with CCW rotation with minor modifications (shortening the point  drive shaft and drilling for the 009 drive flange). The centrifugal advance on my RC dist works in CCW rotation.

I doubt that you could just "flip" the advance weighs over and turn a CW dist into a CCW rotation dist, but it may be worth a try.

Heres a Mallory link.

http://www.mrgasket.com/Support/InstructionSheets/MalloryInstructionSheets.aspx

If you go to the YH & YT advance change kit PDF, it shows the CCW and CW advance units as being mirror images of each other so I doubt that swapping the weights would change it over.

EDIT:

 Heres another link

http://www.123ignition.nl/cyl/4.html

The dist for the Volvo P1800 is identical to the VW dist, but has a CCW rotation. (click on the "read more" links for measurements of the distributors)

Thanks for posting that last link fishead.  One of the distributors it lists is a CCW with blade drive for MG.  Pretty sure that I had a stock one in the box.   I'll take a look.

Great find Fishhead but from what the bottom link shows is that the 1800 distributor is a vacuum advance unit.
The picture is just a generic one.   :(   Also all of the rpm limit specs for these distributors is 7,000 RPM's .   :(

Here is a Volvo 1800 dis on ebay.......

          http://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-P1800-1800-544-140-122-Amazon-B18-B20-Ignition-Distributor-/140771711430?hash=item20c6a5d9c6&item=140771711430&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_100&vxp=mtr

As you can see the location of the oil O ring is lower than on a VW distributor.  The dimensons in the diagrams don't show exactly where the O ring is located on the shaft.   :(

Thanks Frank, but I'll buy it and try to make a CCW one out of my old RC one and the new EBay Dizzy. If the worst happens and it's useless, I'll buy a VW............  ::)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

That's too funny Terry !              About the VW part.   ;)    As for transferring parts into the bosch 009, i think the Mallory is a larger distributor.

Terry,  Why don't just contact Mallory and see if they can help you with your problem.  If they can make up a special batch of v8 distributor caps for a 4 cylinder distributor for Russ Jr i'm pretty sure they can deal with a reverse rotation 4 cylinder VW distributor.    ;)       Here is their contact info ........ http://www.malloryperformance.com/ContactUs.aspx

Jag, i'm pretty sure you can get a electronic conversion specifically for the Mallory distributor. I think the one for the VW disributor is different.  I'm gonna do some more research........  :o

JAG, I had the same thought last night and spent an hour googling, looking for that info.  I couldn't find anything on that subject. Gonna have to call Don ZIG that custom makes magneto's and rebuild's them also.   ;)

JAG, I contacted Don Zig and he said that the magnetos do create power in both directions BUT, you cannot use a regular clock wise turning magneto in a counter clock wise situation becuse of the points cam inside is reversed and the timing between the engines camshaft and the magneto's points cam would cause the rotor and the cap to burn up.   :o
He can build a magneto or convert one to reverse rotation if someone needed one.   ;)

Honestly it doesnt shock(lol) me that the mags work both directions or the fact that the timing is the important bit to make it actually work on a motor.
What is odd is this is really the first talk I have heard about this when dealing with a SOHC.

Can we confirm that the RC unit spins CCW?

Yep,  The Honda and the kz engines both run clockwise.  I installed my timing disc shaft into the housing and turned it clockwise as if it was installed on the engine and the distributor rotor turns counter clockwise.   ;)

Yes the RC dist spins CCW. Its mounted and running.

A Carlise Spring meet, I talked to the Mallory guys and they said that if they made a dist for someting at 1 time, they still have the technical papers to possibly make it again.(I didnt talk prices). Maybe ask them about the Volvo dist or ask about the RC dist ( the RC dists I have seen all had Mallory tags on them with non Volvo applicaton/part numbers) and use the term CCW instead of reverse rotation because correct rotation isnt always CW.

The Mallory dist has a larger diameter "head" than  the Bosch dist do. Check my link to the BMW 2002 dist on page 2 of this thread to see them next to each other( The Bosch dist isnt a VW009/Volvo, but the "head" is the same diameter as the 009). The Unilite head is slightly bigger than the old style Mallory dual point head.

the vw dist does fit ,but is real headache to modify the advance weights for ccw rotation , the vw mallory is quite easy , pull apart , swap over bob weights , you got to  swap over the advance plate  ( they are actally marked left an right ) only thing you gota cut off pins for the springs , an re position , advance total in mallory is adjustable , vw hasn't ...bit of a brainstrain but all doable , been using mine on the strret for a while

Ok, back to the gear situation........I went to a machinist that cuts gear teeth and he measured the teeth and bevel angles.  He doesn't think it's an off the shelf part.  Also that gear is case hardened.  Not cheap to reproduce .    >:( >:(
I'm still working on finding a manufacture of gears to see if they might stock this gear or if it is a custom piece.   :-\   ::)
