750 K5 first start oiling questions.
« on: July 13, 2012, 11:36:42 AM »
I'm planning on kicking her over for the first time this eve. The details. Topend rebuild, removed oil pump  a month ago submerged it in oil and spun it till all air was gone. I am going to remove the tappet covers and pre-oil the cam. I also plan on kicking it over about 35-40 times to prime the pump once again. I have a pressure gauge installed. Besides adding oil what am i missing? Thanx

One suggestion...have your wife do that... ;D  Seriously, good luck and let us know how it comes out. Sounds like a good plan.

Why kick? No starter? It'd turn much faster with the plugs out. Just did mine and I hadn't primed the pump. Couldn't get any pressure until I fired her up. I used assembly lube on the bearing surfaces top and bottom. I added 3 qts to the oil tank and 1/2 to the oil pressure gauge galley then began my starting procedure. Took a few tries but the oil pressure gauge popped to 70lb when it fired.

Ummm...

It's Friday the 13th.  Yeah, that's what you're missing.   ;)

Just kidding, how did it go?

All the best,

Shane

I filled the oil galley where the gauge is and within a few seconds I had plenty of oil at the cam. Thanks for the help.

No need to kick it 35-40 times!!!!
That could damage the kickstarter. Want to split the cases?
