Jerking those Jap zerks...
« on: June 20, 2006, 09:51:12 PM »
If you are having a hard time getting grease in (and keeping it in, or the push-on fittings in) to the swingarm bushings, it's because the Japanese standard grease zerks had no capture lip. Every grease gun you find in the U.S. has lip-grip fittings.

So, you can pull the Japanese ones out (they are just pressed in), thread the hole and install U.S. type zerks. These really help forcce the grease into the bushings and keep it there, and they don't fall back out! (I actually pushed my bike over once while trying to hold a hi-PSI grease gun against the fitting, hence this change...  :P ).

The ones shown below were threaded straight 1/4-28 threads. You should be able to get a tap & drill set for these at Home Depot or most hardware stores.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

i've never met a pair o' zerks i could find anything wrong with...and believe me, i give'em a once or twice over... :D

Thanks HondaMan - a timely note for me as I am making my way through your list of handling improvements - one item of which was the bronze swing-arm bushings, and, of course, the accompanying zerks...

of course AutoZone only has what appear to be TRACTOR zerks...

Autozone...    *shudders*     The store with 3 aisles of shifter knobs and crappy decals, and 1/3 an aisle dedicated to actually useful automotive fluids.   ::)

I love me some Napa nipples...

AND, they have a type that is press-in, not threaded, WITH the proper capture lip and serrations to make them grip...very nice.

I tapped and installed regular nipples on mine...I was hoping the new set-up would allow grease to flow all the way across the swingarm(threw the spiral gully), but it just seems to stay on the end(end bushing)...anybody else notice this? ???...or is this grease making across and I don't know it? ???
