I believe this will be the week to repaint my bike. I was going to go with a completely stock red for my 76 CB750k. But now I am not so sure. I am leaning more towards a period correct metal flake candy red. It is the same exact color my dad had on his Honda chopper back in 76. Seems like a fitting tribute.

Project update:

Side covers repaired and partially sanded. Lots more hand sanding required to get them back down to natural plastic. I've got about 4 hours into them and have about 6 hours left.

Tank stripped to bare metal. What a job. It had be skim coated with a spray "sandable primer". Which is the same as a skim coat of Bondo. Lots and lots of sanding to get it to metal. No rust found but there were a few minor dents that were repaired. Still a nice solid rust free tank.

Tomorrow is body work time for the tank and if I have time I will put in a few hours of sanding the side covers.

Picking a color is killing me. I know I want flake and not metallic. This is required for a period correct paint job. That and I love flake and have been wanting to paint something in flake FOREVER.

I thought I was set on a candy red with mini flake. Now I am eying a blue and a green. Then there is always the orange or the gold. Yikes. So many great colors and only one bike to paint.

Update

Tank is down to bare metal. Side covers are 100% free of paint and primer.

Body work and order paint tomorrow.

Today I bought clear, epoxy primer, hardener and blue flake. $300. Yikes.

Then I dropped my iPhone. My screen broke. $100 later the screen is fixed and now the home button is not working. Pricey day.

Sounds alot like my day. Are you going blue flake on top of the primer? What's your game plan?

Black primer with blue flake on top. Two types of clear required. If it works like its supposed to it will have a deep brilliant luster. If it does not work like it is supposed to, it will be an expensive learning process.

What brand paint ?

HOK has several flake colors that are usually mixed into a clear, followed by more clear without flake. The good thing about the HOK flake is: you don;t necessarily have to use their clear. You can use an off-brand. much cheaper - same look.

I think it will be a glorious tribute to your pops. Nothing says "70s" like a good meat flake.

Is this your tank? I love it! Maybe you'd be willing to share that paint recipe with the rest of us. That in my opinion is flake done right.

Update:

Skim coat of body filler added and then sanded off in order to build up any low spots. Tank is now smooth as glass

Black Epoxy primer sprayed on tank and side covers. then wet sanded until smooth.

Mixed Clear and HOK royal blue F22 flakes. Applied three coats of this. Wanted a forth but HOK advises against it.

Cleaned the gun and then started applying clear to bury the flakes. 10 coats later it was left to dry over night.

Tonight I will wet sand and determine if it will need more clear or if I have enough.

I will see if I can post some picks in here. If not I will add a link to a hosted site.

Greenjeans, what color is that on your tank? It looks like and orange-red color.

Update:

Wet sanded the entire tank last night. Removed all the shine. Then we taped off stripes, taped off the rest of the tank and added Olympic White stripes. Once they were tacky the paper and tape was removed and the clear was applied again. Six more coats. It will dry for two days and then the wet sand and buff starts.

Looking really good. I can see the metal flake much better now. What size and brand did you go with? Stripes look very sharp too. I recently got this from EBay hopefully it will work for my stripes.
