1975 CB550K Ignition Switch location
« on: September 03, 2012, 10:04:21 AM »
Hi- I'm a new owner. I just bought a 1975 CB 550 K-
the previous owner had mounted the horn where I believe the original ignition switch would have been located and the switch bolted to a bracket attached to the handlebar clamp just below the indicator lights.  The ignition switch from these models should go below the tank, no?  I've tried looking at the parts fiche but for the earlier 550's its really hard to read- they have so many parts listed on each page of the fiche.  I was hoping someone with an early 550 could take a picture of how the ignition switch is mounted so I can see which pieces I am missing.   It looks like there should be some kind of right angle bracket down there.
Thanks! great forum

Hi and welcome. On my '76 550 K, yes the ignition switch was originally mounted under the tank on the left side.

Same as 500 four

The bracket I believe is welded to the frame and it isn't a flat piece of steel but it is a raised radiused part that  the ignition switch nose which is threaded around the lock cylinder protrudes through and a chromed special "nut that is round with slots cut into it secures the switch to the bracket. That is the design on my '74 cb550.
Same kind of concept as on very old cars with metal dashes that the ignition switch "bolted" to the metal dash panel with a hole in the dash. The securing trim ring or nut was a bit special so it looked good and it defeated normal tools for removing it.

I have a feeling that whatever the bracket bolts to may have been cut off since my bike came with engine bars. On my frame there is a single hole for a bolt perpendicular to the direction the key switch would face.  Is the bracket a right angle piece?  I'll try to take a picture of what I have

Here is a pic of the key switch mount on a 75 CB550 K.
I bolts to the frame with a single 10mm bolt behind the forward frame down tube.  (Not seen in the pic.)

That was a hard bracket for me to find... My PO had the ignition completely removed and turned into a switch under the seat. Found a couple of brackets but they sold so fast. It just has a bolt that tightens it around the tube. Good luck with your hunt, it was half the fun for me!
