It may be legal, BUT
« on: September 09, 2012, 08:38:04 AM »
It may be legal to for your 12 year old shoot off his automatic weapon 35 feet downhill  from where I am
cutting down trees on my property, BUT.....it is not nice.

This happened to me yesterday. I was not happy. The kids' mother said the Vermont State Police
said their target range was legal. Somehow I am thinking NOT!

Fish and Game Warden and I are going to pay the parents a visit this week and review safety.

common sense would tell you to shoot away from houses, people, livestock,ect.. but if the kid was shooting by himself with out a adult around then i would guess that would be somekind of child endangerment.the sheriffs here wouldn't go for sh!t.sounds like you got some hillbillys living by you.

No, common sense would be to not let a 12 year old near any kind of weapon without proper adult supervision.  And Mom checking with the State Police is not proper supervision.  Mom needs enough experience to supervise, not just shoot.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Purely a guess (not in law enforcement in any way) but having the neighbors file a complaint over my son cutting the grass and the clippings going on their lawn (in a rural area, not a subdivision) with the police, I'd say if there is evidence of bullets entering/crossing your property line without your consent there is a definite law enforcement issue.

Trees have value, they could owe you for a tree or two. If you hit someones tree with a car you have to replace it. A friend had this happen. No, he owned the tree.

Lately vehicle noise laws. We moved to a main drag (though only a 30mph, residential zone. Even if it is 4 lane). We're not on that street, just close, and I hear every nutter that things it's a drag strip. I was never a proponent of noise control, but living here really puts me into a different state of mind. it ain't illegal, but it sure as hell isn't nice. And it sure as hell isn't neat for the people who live there, whatever the riders (or often drivers, this is as much about cars and trucks and glass packs and all that) think.

I have 4 acres and I am very careful about my compound bow target and back drop. My neithbor has a habit of shooting 45ACP on his acre of land while his back stop is few two by fours and boxing bag.

Talked to police, even called the police to check on him - no resolution. He is legal doing it even its apparently unsafe.

Told him I will sue his a$$ as soon as there is a bullet or shell on my land.

or even worse someone might start shooting back. I imagine in that neighborhood you would have every right to do that.

I talked to the neighbor. He tells me his sons are state champion shooters.
Yeah, that's nice to hear, but the rocks next to the targets
still made me nervous, I pointed out.
He agreed to move his range somewhere else on his 40 acres,
but says he is still going to sight his high powered rifles in the same area. IE,
I will probably need to call him before going onto my own land to cut wood.
Their are really no gun laws in Vermont.
Fish and Game never showed up.
Well, I don't want to be cynical, but me thinks the richer man is
showing his influence in this matter. But that never happens, right?

Yikes, that sounds like the a-hole that likes to fire his automatic rifles off his back porch when my mom has customers only a few hundred yards away at her cafe. They complained to the sheriff but he said if they did anythimng it would only make matters worse.

Some people, they just don't #$%*ing get it.  ::)

I would just call your neighbor to announce that you have just acquired the biggest f'n auto repeating gun in existence, and you are planning to always carry it with you when on your property.  Also explain that in self defense you are intending to return fire if ever the need arises.

You guys in Vermont do have the right to bear arms...don't you?

#$%*, give me the football problem any day.

Ha ha, when I left the army I worked at a plant hire agency, and there were a pair of Irish boys on our books who came from around your parts Lester. When Gerry Adams announced that the IRA were handing back their weapons I asked one of the boys if this was true, and he said, "Only the old ones", and gave me a wink. I'd be checking those footballs for fuses, if I was you.......... ;D

There are no problems in my garden Terry, so f*ck off. Come here be here and live it. Sorry was I a #$%*?

Ha ha, that's the problem with censorship in these forums Lester, I can't work out what a #$%* is? I'm sure it's lovely in your garden now, but when I visited the Emerald Isle back in 1974 (my grandparents were Irish) things were pretty nasty in the north, I remember driving past all the burned out cars on the outskirts of Belfast and Londonderry, and the RUC roadblocks, twas like a scene from "1984". Anyway, I'm glad that it's nice there now. ;D

Set up your own target facing their property and call them to advise them to stay out of their yard when they hear you and your friends shooting.
I'm sure some kind of compromise will swiftly follow.

Everybody in the colonys had Irish grandparents ffs.  ;D

Pretty much.
I learned the hard way about cracking jokes with some Irish rugby mates at the pub about IRA jokes. They got this really serious look on their faces and simply said those kinds of jokes are not at all funny- ever.

They said back home you don't kid around with those kinds of jokes.

Yep, that's true mate, but good for me, I'd much rather be here than over there, like my grandparents, I couldn't get out of Northern Ireland fast enough, what a dump! But as long as you like it there Les, that's great! ;D
