Is it ok to adjust the cam chain tension this way?
« on: September 09, 2012, 06:11:23 PM »
All

I was doing the preventative maintenance on my 82 Nighthawk 650 today and adjusted the cam chain tension, per my service manual instructions.

Upon completion, i had a very light ticking/tapping, with the engine running.. whereas it as not there beforehand?  :o

An observation with this method:
1) it was difficult to maintain a smooth rotational movement with the plugs installed, as i tried to tighten the nut to secure the tensioner.

What did to make the adjustment go smoother:
1) removed all spark plugs
2) got a helper to slowly rotate the crank whilst i secured the cam chain tensioner nut.

after this, the tickety, tick went away  :)

I began to think that the noise was due to the cam chain being improperly adjusted, but not sure? also wanted to e sure that the method i used (2ND attempt) was OK?

Thanks all, i sincerely appreciate all the advice/help received here!
