Did anybody else see this?
« on: September 10, 2012, 10:36:58 PM »
Why did this ad show up over on the right side of my screen on this site?  Have I been spending too much time on the Cute Chubbies and Pleasurable Plumpers websites?  Is the internet really that smart? ;D

You must have.....

I recently googled for tires. On this site I keep getting ads of online tire sellers.

Seems that google keeps a record of ip addresses and searches, and when you enter a site with google ads, they offer you products by companies that have what you have recently searched for.... :-)

Ha ha, sign up for Google services to not be tracked. ::)

Firefox with Adblock Plus and Ghostery work well but deny the forum revenue by blocking Google ads & trackers.

As time goes by you can expect targeted advertising to get even better. Soon you'll see it on your TV as well.

Facebook kinda scares me. About a year ago my ex and I went on vacation to Cali, neither of us ever posted any pictures or said anything about the trip on facebook and then a few months later on my page are "places visited" with a map pointing to each location Sturgis MI, Las Vegas NV and L/A CA.. Fairly certain the only way they could have known i had been to Los angeles is if they were tracking my crackberrys gps.

Call me paranoid, but I keep all location services turned-off on my phone unless I need them. Photo location tags are never turned on. How's that for paranoia?  ;)

Believe me ive been "paranoid". i wouldnt have been as freaked out if didnt know about those things. I always have my gps "deactivated" dont even use it for directions ever.. you can never truly deactivate any cellular device that uses gps even pulling the battery, They have the same tech as some nice alarm clocks have, that little back-up battery that has just enough juice to keep all your information "safe" and "beaming back to scotty".  :(

+1 on all of the above.

I don't want to be tracked myself out of principle. I remove the battery from the cell phone sometimes.  That being said, I do want to be able to have a record of where I was [or was not] that I can access. I use a credit card for that.

The fact is that the Big Brother responsibilities of out governments have been farmed out/subcontracted to the corporate side. The advantage is it perhaps reduces our tax burden bt having the private sector invade our privacy, with our own consent abd willful ignorance instead of having a bureaucracy full of milktoast incomps doing it.

Facebook, et,al. has been a boon to the Law Enforcement community. And for all the people who participate they have a very accurate record of their activity online along with volunteered information about personal  lifestyle.

It probably has more to do with ip address than gps location.

Anybody of you open a google search and search for "what's my ip address", or simply go to this link

http://www.ip-adress.com/

There are hundreds of pages that will show you what's the ip address assigned to your computer, and from that, the networks knows where are you located -actually it knows the location of the Internet Gateway.

If you have been travelling and using the Blackberry to connect to the internet, you have been assigned different ip addresses. If you have some kind of automatic connection with facebook, it can now from there where have you been.

Why not killing your facebook profile altogether? I did it long time ago, it was extenuating pretending to be cooler than I actually am.... :-) no regrets whatsoever. No twitter, no linkedin, only memberships in cool internet forums :-)

I use facebook to keep in touch with relatives around the world. If big brother wants to know what colour my newborn granddaughters #$%*e is I don't care.  ;D
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
