Is this fixable?
« on: July 02, 2006, 12:23:42 AM »
A few of the fins on my engine have suffered from some
prior garage rash.  Is this fixable....hopefully on the bike and
without reaching for a tool that has large tanks attached?  ;D

Maybe some sort of metal mender??  ???

By the looks of it, I wouldn't try to re-bend it back into shape or straighten with a pair of grips or anything - it will probably just snap off,

I suppose if you could heat it through enough to make it malleable you might have a chance, but I think you may just cause yourself more grief if you try...

How old is that aluminium alloy anyway ?? :)

This is a sandcast....1969 engine....so maybe I will leave it and
call it "character".  ;D

If you're into a purely cosmetic 'engine-in-situ' job you might try some of that heavy duty industrial alloy putty to rebuild/reshape your fins. Any professional repair involves taking out-/dismanting the engine, careful expert welding and excessive use of Dremel-ish tools.

On the other hand: your bike is 36 years old and has to have some 'battlescars'; If your bike runs fine I'd go for the 'character-option' until an engine rebuild is due anyway.....  ;)

I would just take a Dremel and then do some file work to straighten out the lines and leave it go. Nobody who doesn't know bikes will know what you did, and those who do will know why...   ;D
