My Machine
« on: September 25, 2012, 02:05:05 AM »
In the 1960's the older riders we knew taught us to call our motorcycles "our Machines".

We said things like "taking my Machine over to Dan's house'.  "We rode our Machines to DC & back this weekend."

Anyone else remember this or was it simply a local thing in rural NY during the 1960's & 1970's?

I think I am going back to this way of communicating,  (Bell bottom jeans cannot be far away.    ::) )

Today I am going to pick out a new set of handle bar grips for my Machine during my lunch hour.

Tomorrow I need to buy insurance for my restored Machine.

Sounds like something out of a movie.

Be careful your kickstart doesn't get caught in the leg of your bell bottom jeans.  Be kinda hard to get a foot down

I too come from upstate N.Y. and we called our bikes a machine. It's like folks from New Hampshire, it doesn't matter what kind of cage they drive, it's still called" Vehicle". I still call them machines, because they are.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Nice to hear another remembers this method of identifying their ride.

I have become habituated calling them Bikes but I think Machine will be better.

Maybe the Lance Armstrong disappointment got me thinking of this again.  >:(

Bruce Springstein, New Jersey State Song, Born to run, how many times was motorcycles called machines? Can't be local slang, maybe northeastern, but not  just in upstate  N.Y.

Shinny machine, suicide machine....You know you are right, the word" machine" sounds like a way better word. And I think that I will curb my usage of the word "bike" And use machine and cycle more often and get back to a more manly way describing what it is that I ride.

Machine is also a common slang term for penis.  Potential for many humorous misunderstandings exists. ;)
