XR600
« on: September 27, 2012, 03:50:10 PM »
Usually my projects start off with a bike i found and then progress from there but this time we will start with a set of forks.
My next project is an XR600. I bought the forks i want to use. But that is all i have so far. Still waiting on some money so i can buy the bike. These popped up local for $100 so i bought them. 2003 CR450 Said the were revalved for for intermediate 180 lbs. not sure what that all means. But nice score for the price.

They look nice mate, I've got a nice original XR500 in my garage at the moment, and am thinking of making the owner an offer......... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

No totaly sure yet but some sort of urban tracker dual sportish bike. SOmething fun for around town but still aggressive enough to do dirt roads. Some inspiration.

OOOoooohhhhh, I like the Trackmaster.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Nice. Looking at the original XR500 in my garage though, I don't see much of a performance advantage, they were a stripped down Enduro bike so weren't carrying a lot of unnecessary weight, so I guess it's more of a styling improvement, rather than a performance improvement.

I like the "Ducati 900SS" look bike, I've seen a very similar SR500 version here in Oz, over here we had a "thumper" race series and guys were buying Suzuki RGV's with clagged engines and replacing them with big singles, they were surprisingly quick, not to mention small and light. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Yeah there is not much weight to strip. Having the modern forks should help a lot. Its going to be an around town bike mostly but i still would like to be able to take it off road a little and as terry mentioned i would like to give it a little styling improvement as well. I keep getting drawn toward the super moto style but i just dont see that being conducive to any off roading. I want to be able to jam down the train tracks through town or cut across dirt fields. Those are my thoughts on what i would like but who knows what will happen once i have one.

Well I'm seriously thinking about that XR500 in my garage mate, I rode my BMW R100RS up into the mountains today, and on my way down again, I was being pretty careful negotiating corners signposted as low as 10 MPH, when from behind me a massive BRAAAT exploded beside me and a young guy on a big 4 stroke dirt bike or "Super Retard" exploded past me.

I almost crapped my pants. I'd already had one near miss when I rounded a corner to find a wanker in a SUV driving at me on my side of the road mid-bend, but the noise this thing made as the rider roared past was like a gun going off. Sweet! With the BMW, the riding position is "head down and butt up", so I was envious of this guy sitting up straight and throwing his bike around those tight bends like they were nothing.

The XR500 in my garage is fitted with knobby tires but they're old and worn out, so I think I'd install some "dual purpose" tires, if I can find one for that 23" front wheel. Of course all this might be wishful thinking if Ken, the owner, doesn't want to sell it, but he's a bit of a "wheeler and dealer" and he told me that he wants to buy a Ducati Mike Hailwood Replica the other day, so this might help him get closer to some Italian mechanical porn. ;D

You could always lace up a little smaller wheel to the front or even swap one from a 600, they are 21 and have plenty of dual sport tire selection. I currently have so 80/20 dual sport tires on my xt350. Its a ton of fun but i would like a bit more power hence the pursuit of the xr600.

I think this is right up your alley.

Small hijack. Just looking at the XR's and your 350 Yammie, with everyone having trouble with fiberglass tanks due to your crappy fuel, i wonder why someone isn't pumping out tanks in fuel resistant plastic...?  8)  Maybe a new venture for  Frankestuff .. ;)

There are tons of aftermarket plastic tanks for these bikes. http://shops.hookit.com/acerbis/Categories/Honda/1467.aspx
the are very popular with the adventure bike crowd. and anyone who wants an increased fuel capacity.

Good point Mick, I had a 1981 XT500 back in the 1980's, the tank was too small for long rides so when I rode it to Bathurst for the Easter TT, I fitted a plastic "Enduro" tank for the ride up and back. It worked real well, I must see if I can find some pics when I was up on the mountain. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I like the wheels on that XR FF, I like the idea of just swapping out a pair of wheels rather than re-rim the existing wheels, that way I can play in the traffic (pun intended) or out in the sticks. ;D

I think Mick was talking about some neat custom tanks, as opposed to those Enduro style tanks? ;D

Thats right Terry, i have seen plenty of long range plastic tanks for XT's and XR's and so on but i wonder why no one is doing custom plastic tanks for the cafe brigade and the likes..?

I would take one of these tanks in plastic.

I guess the reason you see metal or fiberglass tanks is it is easier for people to modify the tank, IE tank mounts. not many people can do plastic work. Just my theory.

That is nice, although there's probably around 30 minutes of riding fun with that tank, so don't stray too far from a gas station...... ;D
