« on: September 12, 2012, 04:30:47 AM »
I am an Australian and shortly my wife and I will be holidaying in Canada and the US. We will be visiting Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Quebec, New York, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. I would like to know if there are any Motorcycle or Automotive Museums in these Cities that are worth visiting. Thanks, Pat

Just came back from Motorcyclepedia in Newburgh, New York. If I can ever get the pictures off my phone, I'll send them your way. It's a nice place with many vintage bikes from early Indians, Harleys and racers to 70's choppers and Jap bikes. Worth a look if you're making the trip.

Brand new Lemay museum in Tacoma, not to be missed!

I was there for a grand opening a couple of weeks back and while there the ACE CAFE was having a motorcycle event on the outside lawn. Pretty freakin cool. The museum is an architectural masterpiece and the collection is one of the best in north america.

If you're going to be in Vancouver BC you should visit Seattle too. Frankly Vegas and LA are the two worst cities on the west coast IMHO. San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver the best.

Not in one of your scheduled cities, but if you get a chance "Big Daddy" Don Gariits' Museum of Drag Racing is in Ocala, Florida. You can also call and order an autographed copy of his self written autobiography.

No aviation museums in Toronto worth mentioning.  One was recently closed and is looking for a new venue.  Ottawa (the capital) has a very nice aviation museum.  http://www.aviation.technomuses.ca/

I went to Harrah's as a kid, with my Dad and Uncle, prolly before 1980. It is a bit of a drive from Vegas to Reno, but it is a good one. I heard that it was auctioned off at one point, but I looked for it and it still exists, with 220 cars. It seemed bigger when I was there, but 220 is a bunch of cars still and information is here:

Too bad you aren't going by Atlanta, or actually Birmingham. Barber Museum  is hard to compare, and if it's bikes you want to see vintage week (about three weeks from now) makes it exponentially better.

Had a private two hour tour of the museum last night.  We managed to cover about 1 1/2 floors out of 5.  Absolutely incredible every time I go and this is the third time I have been this year.

They now have a couple of reproductions of bikes that required you start a fire in the tender box to start them.  Makes you realize kick start aint so bad.

OK. We are back form our trip to Canada and the US. Unfortunately I didn't get to see the Peterson Museum at LA. The "hop on hop off" bus stopped just outside the Museum but it was 5.45pm and it closed at 6pm. We hopped off and on a couple of times too many during the day. Bugger! Thanks, Pat
